I have a strange Software, that defined itself as standard for my camcorder
and now doesn't offer me the dialog to change this (the std. dialog from
windows, what application to start).

Any idea, where I can find this setting in Windows 7 Ultimate 64?

HELP ICONS

I have asked in the past, and so far I have not solved this issue.

On my laptop under Vista Home Basic, for a few months now, I do not have
Icons in my Help Folder. Just an X where the Icons should be.

Hi Ken. I am sorry to hear your assessment, but I agree with it too. I
like NGs much better than web-based-anythings. I can keep track of many
NGs using Thunderbird that I just can't with a browser. Darn shame.

If not BIOS locked, the motherboard will no longer be an Acer so you
will be breaking the "spirit" of the OEM EULA (end-user license
agreement.) The only way is to try it out. Be advised, you may need
to use the telephone activation option instead of the on-line
activation.

64 bit programs

Is there any utility or program that can tell whether your system is using 64bit programs?
I ask because I just installed Nitro PDR Pro 6 x64 and it installed it in the x85 Programs Directory. There's no way I can even tell if a true 64 bit program is actually being utilized in my 64 bit OS. I know I'm being anal but with all the talk of 64 bit vs 32 bit, I started getting curious. Seems that all the big box stores sell computers mostly with 64 bit Windows installed but a great majority of the programs are 32 bit (I know they don't make many).

You might try the Excel newsgroup but could it be that the user is not
an administrator and Vista is locking out the ability for Excel to run
Macros? Could it even be something with D.E.P? See is anyone else can
make a better guess because that's all this was.

Computer crashed suring revent update

My computer froze during the restart process of a recent update
(KB971512) forcing me to manually restart it and now loads very slowly.
It runs fine except for whenever it need to load (example: Left 4 Dead 2
take about 10 minutes to load a level, but then runs fine besides the
occasional sputter when it loads during play).

Other things: whenever I start Windows, it comes up with "Windows
update: Configuring 3/3 0%" but then moves onto the login screen. I also
tried running Windows update again (I thought maybe it would catch it's
own error or something) but I get error 80070002, which I already did
their prescribed fix for only to still get the same error. I cannot
uninstall this update from the installed updates list. Also, I'm on
Vista 64 bit.

I think that's about it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: Oh wow. Sorry about all the typos in the title.

Send to mail recipient not working

I am unable to attach a photo to e-mail from Windows Explorer in Vista.
I use MS Outlook as my default mail.

For example, with a photo, I right-click, select "Send to....Email
Recipient", select size, slect "Attach", it goes through "attaching"
the files but then nothing happens. A mail window does not open.

I have set all my defaults to Outlook yet still nothing happens and not
quite sure what to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Stocks Gadget on Windows 7

I was disappointed that the Stocks gadget was not included on the final
release version of Windows 7. After a Google search I ended up copying the
gadget from the RC DVD. The gadget now installs but says 'Cannot connect to
service'. Other gadgets such as the Currency and Weather ones which must
connect somehow work.

How do I enable the connection, alternatively would a copy of the Stocks
gadget from Vista work?

There doesn't seem to be a way of clearing the Administrative Event log.
This log looks like a total log of all the Windows events logs.
The only way I could clear the Admin log was to clear all the individual Windows logs.

Check your previously installed updates and see if audio or video drivers
were installed by Windows Update. I doubt it's by coincidence both
computers developed the same problem at the same time. If updates to these
items were installed you'll need to roll back the drivers or head to HP and
re-download.

I've always had courteous service from Microsoft. I have contacted them a
number of times with development issues and each time it was a pleasure
dealing with them. I even get follow up phone calls.

Ooops, that may not be possible, but if you have Spybot or Malwarebytes, you
can scan it with either program to see whether there is interference and
correct it in this way.

For starters, take the advice given by Dave-UK.

There is some software available to read dump files. It might be
novice-friendly (one can hope - not many experts in that area!)

Here's one:

It might provide a clue to the problem *if* it created a dump file. Mostly,
in my attempts to read dumps (and back in the old days it wasn't easy), I
mostly just kind of identified the name of the offending file, because I am
not an expert in reading Windows dumps.

One more thing: I'd guess that ntfs.sys is the driver for the file system,
which might imply that you have a corrupt file system. Perhaps it would be
good to boot to a safe-mode command prompt and run chkdsk from there.

BTW, I have a program which creates the same kind of shut-down blue screen.
It doesn't seem to leave a dump file behind, so the above tool didn't help
me. I sent a report to the vendor of the bad software, but I had to use a
camera to get a screen dump, perhaps since the problem causes a hard halt
:-)

Missing right-click option...

When I want to remove my SanDisk USB drive from my computer, in Windows
Explorer I right-click on the drive and select "safely remove". Today the
"safely remove" option is missing from the right-click menu. How does that
happen and how can I get it back?

How to enable a disabled device

Right-click on that Recording tab (where you disabled it) and choose 'Show
disabled devices'

Yes I know that, but the OP was asking WHY he couldn't read this UDF disk on
other machines. He didn't ask HOW to read it on other machines.

Removing Vista From Dual Boot (Vista on C:\; Win7 on D:\)

Win7 installs its own bootloader, similar to but more robust than the Vista
bootloader.
You can go into Control Panel in Win7 and change the time out for booting to
the default OS to just a few seconds, so that you have time to hit the F8
key if needed on boot-up.
With Win7 as the default OS it does not matter what you do to the
partition/drive that has Vista on it. Win7 will always see itself on the D
drive. Most programs that have been installed will look for Windows on the D

There is the possibility of replacing the internal drive of the POS to a
solid state drive. If the unit has a current SATA drive the replacement
would be relatively easy. SATA drives are fairly plentiful and getting a
larger capacity is easy. If IDE (ATA) the only problem there would be the
problem of finding an IDE solid state drive. IDE is a dying standard and
there are few larger drives available for them but they can be found.

If these POS systems are ever networked you could put the SQL database on
the server, create your backups there.

There is nothing wrong with sending the desktop item to the trash can.
Deleting this icon will not delete the file, as you are going to discover
when you do it.
Just leave your files visible and not hidden, as mentioned.

I've disabled this service in the services long ago when it repeatedly caused
error to report.. To no effect even though it still shows itself to be
disabled.

I just now saw it in the task manager under processes.
It doesn't show in my onecare startup listing.
It doesn't show in my msconfig under startups or services.
It shows as disabled in my services.

But there must be something I missed. I'd like to remove it from the startups,
but have no idea where to look.
Reason being it caused another error report last week. When it shouldn't have
even been loaded, much less running.
FWIW: It's a Nero indexing thing.

WHICH free trial software? Or is that a secret? Was it recommended to you
by a trusted friend? Or did you stumble across it on the Web? Or did you
respond to a link in a SPAM message? Can you revisit the site where you
found it and investigate it further?

Perhaps someone here will recognize it and know its secrets.

Often, when we download "free" software from the Internet, we get more than
we bargained for. :>( Usually, viruses and other malware get onto our
computers because WE INVITE them. We don't "practice safe hex"!

Not all freeware is bad, of course, and I don't mean to tar it all with one
brush. Some of the best software I have was free from dedicated and
generous programmers. But if you don't even tell us the name, then we have
to be suspicious.

It's there at the bottom of the 'Edit' menu, not the 'Organize' button,
as before.
Organize > Layout > tick 'Menu bar' if it's not visible.

From what I've researched on the Internet, you likely mean TosIPCsrv.exe,
which is Toshiba's SMART log service which catches problems with your hard
drive. Does this program always stop working? Does an error come up that
it's not working correctly or missing? I don't think it'd affect your
ability to get on the internet.

Did you update/install anything recently, such as an anti-virus program?
Firewalls?

Rasphone.pbk causes Black Screen on startup on Vista Enterprise SP1.

Hi,

I have an application with which I can connect to an Mobile Data Device
via RAS connection. I create an DUN and use RAS calls to establish an
internet connection using my Mobile Data Device.

I have developed the application using VC++ 2005 on Vista.

One of our customers (customers of the firm for which I work for) have
reported an "Black Screen" on returning from hibernate mode and because
of this black screen, he is not able to log-on. The environment is Vista
Enterprise SP1 on Dell Latitude Tablet PC.

The work around is that the user has to log-in in "Safe Mode", delete
"Rasphone.pbk" (which my application created while making connection)
and then he is able to log-in.

I happened to have a look at the Rasphone.pbk that was "possibly"
causing this issue but found nothing unusual or no corruption in it.
This behaviour is inconsistant.

Have you guys faced similar issues where-in you observed an "Black
Screen" on returning from hibernate/sleep/restart on Vista Enterprise
SP1 and which goes away on deleting the Rasphonebook.pbk (after logging
onto Safe Mode).

Unfortunately, the customer has not shipped any RAS Logs to share with
you guys.

Well, Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center
gives a window with a list of networks, and in each entry is a link to View
status.

Click that link and click Details on the resulting panel.

I have no idea if any of those details is what you want, since I only have
one router here, so I see nothing relevant...

broken contacts folder

no, it's not on recyle, the folder isn't restored after restarts and the
tutorial didn't work. The folder is not "moved" or in other location, it
just vanished and it doesn't recreate or work at all :S

any other ideas?
