I just brought a brand new desktop. Gateway GT5692 4G DDR2, X64 Home Premium, ATI Radeon HD3200, with AMD Phenom 8450. I install the COD4 and the game play is so choppy! My friend has this game running on an older XP pc and his is running great....What could be the problem? Anyone please help....cause I feel like an idiot buying this desktop for almost 600 and can't play Call of Duty 4.

The HD3200 is an intergrated graphics card and as a general rule integrated graphics aren't great for gaming but what i've heard of the hd3200 it should be able to handle COD4. Try lowering the resolution in the game and turning down detail settings to see if that makes any difference.

Also check that you have the latest catalyst driver (8.8?) for the graphics card and you have patched COD4 to the latest version. (1.7 i think)

Thanks for replying. I did what you suggested and amazingly the choppy-ness goes away quite a bit. But there still some choppyness here and there. Is there any way I can play this game with better performances? Such as changing my video card or anything at all whatsoever? Thanks.

Your motherboard does allow for an extra graphics card i believe. It will be a PCI-express 16x slot I think. You can either buy another card and disable the onboard graphics or you can buy a ATI CrossfireX capable card and have the two running together for improved performance. The only thing I would bear in mind is that you have a 300W PSU and you may need more power for certain cards.

A video card would go a long way instead of onboard graphics. I think eggyuk made a typo? The sentence should read:
... as a general rule integrated graphics are not great for gaming...

Aaaa ic heh. So if i decide to buy another card and disable the one I currently have. Which of the video card on the market would you suggest that has a decent price? I don't really want to shell out another 200 just for a video card. Maybe 80-150?

I would go for an ATI card as you have an AMD/ATI chipset and it leaves the possibility of CrossfireX still open. I think the HD3870 like this: Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100225L Radeon HD 3870 512MB 256-bit GDDR4 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards $110 after rebate is pretty good or if you want to spend a bit more then the HD4850: Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards.

But that's just me. I'm sure there are loads of threads on here with debates about the best cards.:p

i had this issue when i first ran cod4 on vista even tho i had a 8800gts. What i did was to install the latest directx update from microsoft. may not do anything for you but its worth a try.

Thanks guys. Well I'm just gonna go ahead and order the Saphhire 10025l Radeon HD3870 512mb just as Eggyuk suggest. Once my order arrive, all I have to do is just install it and update the drivers correct? Would I need to disable the current onboard HD3200?

My Computer

go for the ati radeon hd4870, faster than any card out at the moment and only costs £190. Gddr5 512 mb and direct x 10.1.

oh yeah, and you'll have to disable your onboard graphics in your bios screen to avoid conflicts and bottle necks.

don't get the 4870.. for one your PSU will NOT support it. and IF it works at all it will crash daily. that card uses 320 Watts at max, and yours is 300.. the recommended PSU for that card is 500w.

I'm not even sure if you can run the 4850 either.

to be honest, I'd only get something like the 9600GT, or ATI's 3870. those are your options unless you get a better power supply.. so the guy saying to get the 4870 needs to read more, before he gives you some headaches.

Oh lucky I didn't order the 4870, I got this one instead: Sapphire 100225L Radeon HD 3870. I should be able to run this one right? I hope so because I just ordered it a few hours ago. Also, how do you disable the onboard card? Do I first go to device manager and disable or uninstall the current graphic card? Then I should turn off the computer and install the new graphic card and get into the bios and disable it there also? Thanks guy.

My Computer

sorry, didnt realise your psu wouldnt be powerful enough. I assumed most gamers would run a psu 650w or higher, couldn't see your spec either on any post. You have to enter your bios screen to disable onboard graphics.

Oh it all good man. So do I just disable the onboard graphic by going to device manager, download the driver for the new card, then restart and get onto the bios screen and disable it there also. Turn off the power and unplug cord, then install the new card and plug the monitor onto it and install the new driver. Would these steps be good?

My Computer

That's the basic gist of it... but you don't need to do a series of reboots, you can handle it all in one step. Download the new card's drivers now.

Uninstalling the drivers for your onboard isn't necessary, just shut down, unplug, ground yourself, and install the video card. Boot up, go directly to the bios and disable onboard video. Save your changes, exit and load Windows.

When you get to the desktop, install your new drivers. You're done.

ps... on a side note, it's really not important what wattage your PSU has, because as far as video cards are concerned, that's a meaningless indicator. You can buy a high watt PSU that doesn't have sufficient +12 volt amperage just as you can have a relatively low wattage PSU that has high amperage on the +12 volt rail. Video cards do not care about watts; only amperage, the more the better. In the future, next time you decide to upgrade your card, check out your PSU and make sure it has the amps the card wants/needs.

Good Advice on the PSU....many high wattage PSU's are very lacking in the CONSTANT SUSTAINED voltage, energy hungry cards need to be stable...( i still tend to run single rail PSU's )the 3870 you ordered is a good card..practice getting into the BIOS ( if you've never been in your BIOS ) exit without saving any changes till your ready to disable your onboard graphics....... then game on!
