Crysis Loud Thumping sound...

A friend of mine running XP x32 w/SP3 recently purchased Crysis & Warhead, installation went well and everything works fine but, when you start crysis, there is this very annoying thumping sound coming from his logitech 5.1 speakers.

He is running my old rig, Toughpower 600w PSU, EVGA 680i Mobo, ECS 512mb 8800GT w/ Accelero s1/s2 passive heatsink, 4GB OCZ 1066MHZ SLI RAM, E7200 w/ Artic Cooler Pro 7, 500GB HDD, DVD/r/w/dl, Santa Cruz audio card, Logitech 5.1 speaker system.

There is absolutely no problem in every other audio file and/or game he plays, his music sounds very good, videos also sound extremely good with that card except for Crysis, the noise is so extremely annoying that it doesn't lend to try to play the game with it on. Warhead does the same thing but only on the intial loading, once you are at the main menu, the screeching/thumping sound goes away by 80% and you can at least play the game.

We have set the default video & sound Ingame and even though I played crysis with that same rig and do not recall having an issue, I do know that I was using the onboard audio and not the Santa Cruz card. I wanted to ask you to see if you had that issue and what you did about it since Google did not yield any positive answers.

I also tried patching to the last patch but to no avail. I went to the Santa Cruz control panel, tried different things but that did not do anything at all. I do remember CoD 4 or 5 having an audio issue and you had to lower the frequency from 48 to 44 but I don't recall where I had to do it and I wanted to try to do that with Crysis to see if the problem goes away... do any of you remember this as well?

Sorry for the rant guys. :o :p

hi LaVista, i'v got Crysis Warhead and dont have that problem with it but to change the sound settings to see if that works do this:

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Click on Sound
  3. Click on the speakers that are in use then click on properties
  4. Then click on the Advanced tab
P.S your old rig is better than my current lol

My Computer

Stew2, thanks but... what, exactly, am I looking for in the ADVANCE tab?

Your current rig is no slouch either, I sold mine to this guy cos he needed something good and he paid me a fair price for it so I had no choice but upgrade myself ;)

In the Advance tab you can set the sample rate and bit depth. When i installed COD 5 i had to reduce the setting to the following:

24bit, 48000 Hz (Studio Quality)

I dont know if this will work for Crysis but you can try it. Just keep on trying a lower level and hopefully at some point it will work OK.

Stew2, I tried that but, I don't know if I forgot to say this or you missed it but... IT DOES NOT WORK IN "XP w/SP3"

In XP there are no properties under Speakers... any other way or solution where I can try this?

Thanks

AAghh sorry AstaLaVista i never noticed that. Im away from my pc so i cant check XP and i cant remember what sound properties XP has from memory. It seems that a few people are having this problem though, so surely there must be a fix. Sorry i cant help just now.

Stew 2, no, that is not this guy's problem, his is a more loud thumping screech at the beginning of the game, so loud and obnoxious that we must opt for exiting to desktop in a hurry, let alone, play the game to see if the thumping is still there.

Actually, now that I do some memory recollection, once we lowered the volume and attempted to get into the game but after he lands and they start talking, it got even more horrible.

I did find a few things I will try but I have not been able to call my friend or go to his house in a very long time.

I do appreciate you taking the time to keep lending a hand though.

Hello AstaLaVista,
Have you updated the Logitech drivers ?.

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/support_downloads/downloads/

Also, is there a small icon for the sound card/speakers in the task bar ?, if there is try properties in that.
It's been a while since I've seen an XP desktop so this may not apply, but worth a look.
Good luck.

Yes, it was the first thing I tried hoping to get a fix for it.

Hello AstaLaVista,
Have you updated the Logitech drivers ?.
My friend does not have a Logitech mouse, but suffice to say, I have already been in the control panel for the mouse & sound card to no avail.

Also, is there a small icon for the sound card/speakers in the task bar ?, if there is try properties in that.

Yes, I also did that... He does have a 5.1 sorround system and the card seems to pump the sound extremely well everywhere else, except for this game. His Santa Cruz card is old and there is no newer driver than 2003 or 2004 so I am thinking the card is the culprit but it pains me to tell him to upgrade to a new one just because of 1 game that had tons of issues when it first came out (and even after many patches).

There arent really any vast sound properties for XP as in Vista. the only ones that are extensive that i know of is that you can change the hardware acceleration and speaker config.

you could try messing with the hardware acceleration as it shouldnt really sound different unless you put it fully to low. but yeah, if its something from 2004 or older, then 5 years after is a good upgrade.

Yeah, that's what I told the guy but again, he is more into music than gaming so is not worth it.

not sure if this will help or not but here is a link for tweaking crysis.

I'll check it out... thanks!

Remove the sound card and try it with just the onboard sound.
Oh, I know it will work, that was my old rig and I played Crysis and Warhead w/o a glitch. The thing is that he insisted on installing that card because it sounded so much better with the sorround system, which, I do have to agree it does.

He is not that worried about it, it is me more than anything else because, well... I can't back away from a challenge so easy. :o
