Vista - ATI HD 3650 Issue

Howdy, folks.

Specs:
ATI HD 3650 1GB
Vista 32-bit SP2

My issue is odd. A game I play which was released in 1998 works with the "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" that Windows Vista installs automatically. But when I install any supported version of ATI drivers for my card, the game/vista errors "This program has stopped working [...]". I've tried several different versions of drivers but none seem to work and the error still occurs. I've also tried disabling Catalyst AI to no avail.

Any ideas?

Have you tried running the game in compatibility mode ?, may work, give it a go and post your results.

Yes, sorry. I've tried changing it to every compatibility mode and changing security settings. Nothing seems to work.

When i had this problem with a game, (Kingpin), i mounted a Virtual Hard Drive, loaded Windows 98, and played it OK.
It may seem like a lot of work just to play a game, but it's quite easy.
It's the only thing i can think of at the moment.
