Vista pre-installed games-turning them on

Mischa86

Hi, I have Vista Business and want to turn the games on, but when I go to "turn Windows features on or off" and click on "games" and "ok" but then after a few minutes it comes up with the message "An error has occurred. Not all of the features were successfully changed." Is there any way I can get to the games?
Thanks:)

Try selecting only one game at a time from the expanded "Games" list from the same "Turn Windows Features On And Off" box.

In other words, do just "Chess Titan" first. If that works, then do just "FreeCell," and then "Hearts," and so on.

And report back if that works or not.

Buy a real pack of cards.

No, j/k :D

Open up Control Panel.

If you're in the new-type view, click on "Problem Reports and Solutions." This is also in the list on the old-view Control Panel.

On the left side, click "See problems to check."

There will be entries for "Windows Modules Installer." Select the most recent event (should be at the bottom of the list).

A box will open up detailing the relevant information. Copy and paste that info to this thread.

Error 80073701 seems to be a Windows Update error code.

This is a shot in the dark, but try disconnecting the computer completely from the Internet and then turning all the games on at once.

Meanwhile, open up the folder C:\WINDOWS\Logs\CBS and open cbs.log with Notepad. It's going to be a large file so it'll take a few seconds to load up. Press the <Control> and <end> keys together to go to the very end of the file.

Now, <Control> and <F> will open up a search box. Enter "fail" in the box and click the "Up" circlet under "Direction." This will search the file from the end to the beginning for a "failed" notation.

Copy and paste, oh... the twenty preceding lines and the twenty following lines around whatever it finds. It should be recent: like, yesterday, if Vista recognized an error.

Again, no such luck :(

I went to C:\WINDOWS\Logs\CBS and it came up with three options: CBS, CBS.persist and FilterList. But when I click on them (the first two) it says: 'Access is denied' and the notepad page is blank. Clicking on the FilterList brings up a few random numbers and letters or something..

Read this tutorial:http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/84215-folder-options.html
and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types", then you will see correctly file extensions.Try open CBS.log in safe mode if it fail too you have to remove all files from C:\Windows\Logs\CBS and recreate them again.Of course first try to do that in safe mode first,if cannot to do that even in safe mode use Vista DVD or Vista Recovery disk (see here http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/141820-create-recovery-disc.html )
boot Vista DVD (or recovery disk)

Choose language>>repair computer>>from WinRE choose command prompt and type

del C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\*.*

press ENTER

Run system normally, run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin) and type:

sfc /scannow

(it rebuild CBS.log file, and attempt to fix any issue with system)

next run Readiness Tool Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

This tool create CheckSur.log file in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder

Both CBS.log and CheckSur.log files attache to post (under posting area is attachments manager),if CBS.log is too big to attache here, pack it and upload on RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting

Flavius - Ok so I unchecked the "Hide extensions for known file types" but I still can't open the cbs log thing, it still says "Access is Denied".. What's this "safe mode" you speak of? And then I didn't understand the rest of your post, sorry!! I know nothing about computers, you'll have to explain everything very simply, sorry!! :/

Paul - Um ok lol, that guy seems really pissed off..! :P

Safe mode is a booting of Vista whereby only the barest of the bare essentials required to run the operating system are used. This means you can't, for instance, look at pictures or play music in Safe Mode, because the tools Vista needs to do those things won't be booted up. It's the bare-bones OS, stripped of all peripherals like cameras and microphones: everything except your mouse, your keyboard, your monitor and your hard drives are disabled.

So what's safe mode good for?

It's great for fixing things. For instance, since Java doesn't boot in Safe Mode, if your Java installation is infected by a virus then you can make changes to your system in Safe Mode that would normally cause system errors in your regular operating mode when you changed or deleted files.

When you boot up your computer and you see the screen with the logo of your processor, like AMD or Intel or what have you, and before you see the Microsoft Corporation screen with the green bar with the light going left-to-right, press the "F8" key a few times. This stops the normal boot process (the one that sends you to your full OS) and sends you to a menu where you can choose how the computer boots up just this one time. The top option is Safe Mode, there's a Safe Mode With Networking (which is useful because this way a Microsoft tech can open up your computer and peek around while you sit there and follow their instructions), and other useful ways of booting.

Anyway, I just wanted to see what your log said about install errors. We don't need to do that now.

What flavius wants you to do with that del C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\*.* is to erase the three logs that are in that folder right now. Those are old logs.

You have to do that with the command prompt "Run As Administrator." Otherwise, it'll say you can't because you don't have access. You find the Command Prompt normally in your Start Menu, in the Accessories section. Right-click on the Command Prompt and left-click on the option "Run As Administrator" and type in what he told you.

Then when it's done, which'll be in less than a second, type sfc /scannow. This creates a new log and it fixes any system files that are on the fritz, comparing the files you have against original Microsoft files and fixing the ones that dont' compare exactly.

This should be successful and you'll get a message saying either nothing's wrong, something was wrong and it's fixed now, or something's still wrong.

Exit out of the command prompt by typing "exit."

Next...
if you're running any 32-bit version of Vista, download and run this.
if you're running any 64-bit version of Vista, download and run this.
(You can tell which you're running by right-clicking on your "Computer" icon on the Start Menu or your desktop, selecting "Properties" and looking under "System" on the right. At the bottom of that little section it tells you "System type" and that's where you see either 64 or 32 bits.)

That tool will create another log besides the cbs.log, and it will be named checksur.log, and it will be in the same "c:\windows\log\cbs" folder.

And then reply with the "attach to post" of the 2 logs Flavius wants.

:)

Bloody hell!! My brain hurts after all that!! xD Haha..

Ok so I managed to do all that, in Safe Mode it said "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations" when I did the sfc/scannow thing.

Here is the CheckSur.log but I still can't view the CBS.log -when I try to attach it, it says:
"CBS.log
You don't have permission to open this file.
Contact the file owner or an administrator to obtain permission."

Maybe cos I was a bit unsure about a few things..? Was I meant to do the sfc/scannow thing in Safe Mode or normal? I did it in Safe Mode.. And then rebooted and downloaded and ran that thing in normal mode..

My pig headed computer obviously thinks I really shouldn't access this cbs log, but aren't I the "file owner" or the "administrator"? You'd think so, I'm its master!! Lol ;D

Readiness Tool found 814 and it declare it fixed all ,but you have to realize two things:

-Readiness Tool sometimes don't detect all errors at once, sometimes you have to run it many times
-Readiness Tool can't detect corrupted files in many subfolders of C:\Windows folder, thus CBS log is needed.

Make this what I said in my any previous post:
use Vista DVD or Vista Recovery disk (see here Create a Recovery Disc )
boot Vista DVD (or recovery disk)

Choose language>>repair computer>>from WinRE choose command prompt and type

del C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\*.*

press ENTER

Run system normally, run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin) and type:

sfc /scannow

(it rebuild CBS.log file, and attempt to fix any issue with system)

If you really hate console you can also use any linux DVD for example Ubuntu to empty C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder - your choose how to do that :sleepy:.

As I said before, when you finally empty C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder,
Run system normally, run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin) and type:

sfc /scannow

and when it finish, run again Readiness Tool (it will create new CheckSur.log file)

Both CBS.log and new CheckSur.log attache to post

My Computer

I still don't understand what you want me to do. Please, please explain in a more simple way! I'm not an IT professional! :(

I made a Recovery Disc. But I don't understand the rest of your message. What do I do with the recovery disc?

And what does this mean:
"Choose language>>repair computer>>from WinRE"??
I haven't been asked to choose a language.. And what is WinRE??

I'm sorry, but I won't understand you unless you explain step by step :(

When you boot the disc up (and to successfully boot the disc before the hard drive, press <F2> where you normally would press F8 to enter Safe Mode, at the very start of the computer's startup, and the computer will present you with a list of devices you can start up from. Make the DC-ROM drive #1 in the list, save you change and turn off the computer. I press that F key as soon as I see any logo on the screen and I keep pressing until I get the beep, lol. Anyway, turn the computer on again and it'll boot from the disc first) the program it boots asks you what language you want.

Then, it gives you a menu that looks like this:

9k934evmnfd4po90ai3t.jpg

Select Command Prompt. The black box will appear and you can type in anything you like though we prefer you type in the following:

del C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\*.*

This deletes the old logs. We don't want to look at the old logs, we want to look at new ones describing exactly what happens when you turn the computer on. We need 2 logs: cbs.log and checksur.log.

Anyway, so now the old logs are deleted. Restart the computer like normal. Take the boot disc out of the drive so that you don't boot from the disc first. To make the first new one, cbs.log, next type in sfc /scannow.

And it'll take a few minutes and tell you what's up when it's done. And the log will tell us more.

And then you download and run the Readiness Tool from the two links I provided near the bottom of my previous post. That tool runs and creates a second log, the other one we need.

And then come back here and post a message, and use the "Attachment" tool in your Quick Reply box, which is the paper-clip you see on the upper right of the box you post messages in, and attach those two logs from that folder.

If you still don't see the two logs in that C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ folder, you need to do the following:

In the folder's menu at the top that you get when you press the <Alternate> key, open "Tools" and select "Folder Options." Go to the second tab, "View."

In Advanced Settings, you want to "Show hidden files and folders."

You also do not want to "Hide extensions for known file types" nor do you want to "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)," so if those check-boxes are checked then un-check them.

Hit OK.

And you'll see them.

    I like chocolate milk!
thanks for the idiot-proof instructions:) lol!

had a problem though. i managed to figure out how to set the CD/DVD Drive as first bootup option, but then it just has "save and exit" but that doesn't turn the computer off, it just exits the F2 screen thing (whatever it's called) and goes straight to windows normally. so i tried again and instead of letting it go to windows i turned it off manually, or like pressed my laptop's on/off button til it switched off.

then i turned it back on again and this time there was just a black screen asking if i wanted to boot up using the CD/DVD Drive. i said yes and the language thing came up, but then instead of that screen you said would come up, a different one appeared and offered me only one option: "Install Vista"..! I thought that's not what I want to do, is it?!

So I just restarted the computer and here I am.. :(

Ok......So I'm guessing you mean that I should do what it says in the "Resolution" part of that article.. I found an "ASUS Recovery DVD" that came with my computer (my computer is an ASUS), should I use that or the Recovery Disc I made myself? (When I made the Recovery Disc, I followed "Option One - Through a Download", was that the right one? Or was I meant to do the "Option Two - The Manual Way"??).
