The Settlers 4 do not works

Hello everyone :)

So here is my problem
I just found back my Settlers 4 and I want to play it because it was a lot of fun.
I'll copy the post I red because it's the exact same problem :

When I insert the disk, it goes through some kind of Autorun and I'm presented with a Settlers 4 window which gives me the option to install, play single player, play multi player, view Blue Byte news, and to go to their website. Playing single and multi player are greyed out, as the game is not yet installed.

I then press the Install option, my CD drive spins up, I get the little blue loading circle next to the mouse for a few seconds... then nothing. The CD drive stops making any noise, and nothing happens.

I heard that Vista can sometimes be a little slow to open .exe files, so I left the computer alone for an hour and a half to see if anything changed. It didn't.

If I use the Task Manager, I can see that "setup.exe" is showing as running, drawing somewhere in the region of 1,800k memory (it alters on each attempt), and 0% CPU. If I press to install several times without restarting the computer or ending the initial setup.exe process, it shows "setup.exe" in the Task Manager a few times over, all with similar memory usage, and 0% CPU for them all.

I have attempted to run it in compatibility mode as XP Service Pack 2, and Windows 98/ME, with no success. I've also selected "Run as administrator".

I have even disabled Data Execution Prevention to attempt an install, without success. (I have re-enabled DEP since!).

I know the disk is working as I'm presented with the Autorun front screen giving me the option to choose to install, but it won't progress any further, so I'm convinced it's my computer.

I also tried this following :

Completely uninstall the game.

Press the
Windows Key + R

Type in the Run Command:
msconfig

Click the Services tab

Check the Box entitled, "Hide All Microsoft Services"

Press "Disable All"

Apply

OK

Restart your computer.

Try re-installing.

I am running on a Dell inspiron 1750, Windows Vista 64bits SP2. I have more than required to run this game... I think my comp is a lost cause I think but I really hope you can do something to help me, I can't wait to hear that themes musics :)

Thank you ^^

Same thing as usual. Setup.exe is running on Task manager.

Can it has something to do with like (I'm not very good in english) in the description of the task manager it says 32-bit Setup Launcher?

Thank you for responding

K, lets try firewall , do you happen to use Zone Alarm by the way ? Also, have you played / installed this game on another computer to verify the game disk as good ? Also, does your drive play anything else, for example , a movie ?

I've totally disabled all protections and still it's still bugging. No Zone Alarm on this comp.

The game disk is clean (strangely enough). Not sure what you mean by drive, but I can read others CDs with no problems

My Computer

Hmmm, strange. The game works on other computers, your computer will play/run other dvd's/cd's , you have disabled firewall and antivirus , looks like our Gaming Expert guys are gonna have to take over on troubleshooting for you, as i am not sure what else to try . Someone will get on this and post back instructions/suggestions. Hang in there.

Read this: Compatible wins 7 64 bit games - general-discussion - windows-7

I'm suspicious that with it being so old it is incompatible with Vista, especially 64-bit.:( I'm reading of others that have the same problem with no conclusive fix. If the installer is 16-bit then it won't work on Vista because Vista does not have backwards compatibility for 16-bit whereas XP did. The list of supported systems doesn't go past XP. I'm seeing several patches but they probably have to have the game installed. At this point I don't know what to tell you.

Strange they say that Settlers 4 works under windows7 64bits.

You could try running a virtual machine through VirtualBox or VMWare player. It requires that you install XP in the virtual machine (doesn't overwrite your Windows 7 installation. It runs inside of it) and try that. You MIGHT even be able to use XP Mode if you have Windows 7 Professional or higher if the games don't use any kind of accelerated 3D graphics.

Does anyone knows about these? Is it viable or is there any danger using those systems? Would you recommend it?

I red somewhere that vista is supposed to support Settlers4. And Setup is 32bits :/
Anyway I suspect my CD to bug maybe, and because the game cost 5€ I bought one more maybe It will work.

My Computer

Thank you. But strange I red that vista is supposed to support Settlers 4, as it is 32bits and no 16.

Or, you could try running a virtual machine through VirtualBox or VMWare Player. Also since the game cost 5€ I bought a new one I'm supposed to receive it tomorrow, because I can't test my CD, as I tested months ago on another computer and it works, I don't see why I would be from that but I'll try anyway

My Computer

A virtual machine is safe and won't overwrite Vista. You just have to have a legit copy of XP. XP compatibility mode available on 7 pro or Ultimate is just a virtual machine however due to the way it was set up I was unable to get it to work but it comes with a free license for XP.

I know of 3 different programs that will run virtual machines: Vmware, Virtual box, & Microsoft's Virtual PC. The Vmware workstation costs money however there is a trial for it. You will need a trial of the workstation to create it and then the free player. The downside to Virtual machines is that the graphics aren't very good which the exception of Vmware fusion for mac.

So ok I installed Virtualbox and took about 2hours to realize the graphic cards is not in that "emulation", , Indeed graphics aren't good :D
So I'll give up on this solution...

I've also tried to get an ISO image, no sucess., exact same problem. Do you think I could buy some more rencent Windows or whatever exploitation program to get it work or this may come from my graphic cards/processor?

My Computer

Sorry but I have no idea why it won't work.
