Problems trying to play game on external monitor

I'm trying to use my computer to play games using an external monitor ( it's a 73 inch 3d mitsubishi tv if that matters). I'm using an HDMI connection and didn't have any problems using the tv in my bedroom (32 inch sanyo). Everything else on the computer works just fine but when i go into the game it acts like it will start, plays the intro graphics for the company but when it goes to go to the main game screen it's as if the tv doesn't recognize the connection anymore, i just get the blue screen that shows hdmi-1. i've made sure all my video card drivers were updated, played with the different settings for the game but to no avail. Any ideas?

Its a resolution error I'm betting.

The game is running, or trying to, run at a resolution that the tv can't.
Tryplaying with the game resolution, or read the tv manual, until you find a compatible res.

See that's what I was thinking but what throws me off is that it begins to open the game and plays through the intro graphics but when it goes to the main menu is when it loses signal. I've played with the different resolutions but get nothing.
