remote desktop and my work apple computer

can i do this?

enable remote desktop on my vista home basic, (does it even have it?) and then be able to access my computer from work (we use emacs at work)

if so - how?

By default, Vista machines have RDP enabled to accept incoming connections.
You can check this by going to: Control Panel > System > Remote Settings link.
Not sure about anything on the mac.

Only Vista Ultimate has remote desktop functionality and it's not enabled by default. The short answer to your question is no, you can't remote desktop to your home machine because Vista Basic doesn't include remote desktop functionality.

The good news is that there are a number of popular alternatives. Spend a few minutes googling VNC and/or TightVNC. Both packages work very well and they're both free. I recommend TightVNC.
