I keep on getting this on my new HP computer, every time I try to do a back up.

It keeps on telling me to back up, but when I do I get that Back up failed 0x80000FFF.

How do people solve that problem?
Thanks

Try backing up only C drive, when asked enter E drive, otherwise it will backup to D drive which is your recovery. I had the same problem and that cured it. I am a new user running a HP Pavilion s3120n desktop with home prem.

Thanks, William Gunkel, but I tried that also. Nothing ever works with this back up.

Yesterday, I backed up for what seemed forever. Then finally I got this notice : Back up failed, cannot find 0x80070002.

I had told HP that I have problems with this HP computer and Vista, the only thing they could recommend is that I bring it back to factory new stage.

This is insane. Why doesn't Vista do something about that, many people have problems with the back up.

So far I'm not impressed with Vista at all. I've gotten so many error messages with it, XP ran beautifully...

Hello Anitaandjoe, I looked up the error code 0x80070002 and it appears that itis used for multiple purposes. How much space do you have available on partition D? I am a little new at this and have had a lot of conversations with HP on this. It appears that you need 15% free space to do a back up, but maybe that is if your backing up D drive. You might not want to do this but when I was at the end of my rope I gave them permission to take over my computer and fix the problem. If you have had a successful back up, go back in time and do a SYSTEM RESTORE. WITH REFERENCE TO A FACTORY RESTORE, I purchased a set of disks from HP and have done 6 of them. I have had Vista for 5 mos. and for the first time all the bugs are out of it but I am sure they will be more. My advice is to get back with HP and tell them you want help and they will help you. You have 90 days on software and one year on parts. If I find anything on this I will post.

Thank you so very much, I'm afraid I might have to do a factory restore also, I really don't want to.

I may just go back to do the simple "restore" as far as possible for now, have done it for other things without problems, but no "factory restore" yet.

But looking at your e-mail, sounds like I will. I'm not sure if it. I have 1.20 gb left on D, but I'm actually not backing that one up. But that's good to know.

Thank you so much for responding. I also wrote to Microsoft, and they gave me the following link if this can help you or anyone else. Help and Support

Thank you, William,
Anita

I had the same error during backup In my case it was the issue of The Volume Shadow Copy Service

I searched Internet high and low for an answer to my problem (our problem) and nothing seemed to work, even the "Vista's FSUTIL Command"

However, during my endless search I ran into a commentary by one tech who mentioned that this error is many times caused by a corrupted system service... Tada! I was enlightened (I guess dealing with Vista you have to be spiritual :) )

So, I went to check Computer Management -> Services and looked through all services that were stopped. And there it was - The Volume Shadow Copy Service was stopped. I went into the Service Properties and set it to Automatic startup, then tried Backup and Restore again and IT WORKED!!!

This is how my 0x8000FFFF error during Bachup and Restore prosidure was solved. I wish you all success!

P.S. Please comment if this solution worked for you as well

My solution to this was to fix 2 problems.

1) Make sure that the "Volume Shadow Copy" service is enabled and running:

Right click on Computer in the start menu and choose Manage.

In the left pane, expand Services and Applications. Click on Services.

Scroll down to find "Volume Shadow Copy". It should have a status of Started and a startup type of Automatic. If not, you need to enable it:

Right click on the service "Volume Shadow Copy" and click Properties. Change statup type to Started and then click Apply. After clicking Apply, click Start.

2) Check your targeted volume for errors:

Right click Start,

Right click on the appropriate volume,

Click on properties,

Click on Tools,

Click the Check Now button,

Check the "Automatically fix file system errors"

Click Start

When that is complete go back and try backing up again.
