my explorer has stop working,after boot..the dialog box jump out and say a problem caused the explorer stop work and have to close the program..then the screen become blank,no start menu,no icon no anythings.i try to use the keyboard to open the task manager and start the new task,but its work.i have no idea whats was going wrong with it..please..does anyone know how to fix this problem...?

@echrada - It will not solve the problems of sites that require you to use IE because of specific ActiveX components.
By all means suggest an alternate browser, but when someone asks for help fixing something, it would be nice to offer some of that too.
Also, the original poster is talking about ***windows*** explorer - as in it crashes when on the desktop and hence there is no desktop no icons, etc...

Johngalt, i am talking about windows explorer. everything looks normal till she starts up then windows explorer stops working, no start menu, no icons, nothing....from task manager though i can get most things to run and they run as usual

Hi Kyvis and welcome to Vista forums.
Apparentely your explorer stops while loading a prog at startup.
Open msconfig, go to the startup tab and deactivate non-microsoft apps one by one to find the culprit.
You have to reboot each time you make a change.

Hi Sidney1st, i tried all you said and still nothing....just keeps coming up with windows explorer needs to close then a black screen...task manager can get everything up and running but i cant continue to use task manager to open programs

Hide microsoft services and deactivate the non-m$oft services, reboot.

Hi Sid, I tried that and still nothing...i ran a chkdsk on c: which took over 12 hours and found hundreds (literally) of faults which were automatically repaired and it now seems to be working again. Adobe 8 seemed to have most of the faults. I will let you know how it goes! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU HELP!!!! Chayce

At this point, jaag, you should evaluate whether that might be software only or be *hardware* related - as in your HD slowly dying....
I honestly recommend that you backup all your data and *format* the drive a couple of times to make sure it is not failing before reinstalling Vista again.

I have run a 2nd c: drive chkdsk and it comes up with the volume is clear. there seems to be some programs at startup that are causing all the headaches...

Startup programs do not cause invalid check sums / faulty files, unless they are malware. I still say you need to re-install your Adobe Reader and then start looking into why your files are getting corrupted in the first place.
Only time I have corrupted files is in abnormal shutdown (power outages) and one HD failure....

if i allow system configuration utility and UpdateUtil application to run on startup then windows explorer crashes. if i block them from startup then it runs fine
