Vista Ultimate x64 and 8 GB RAM??

I have recently swapped my OCZ 4GB (1GBX4) DDR2 @ 800 MHZ and upgraded to OCZ 8GB Sli (2GBX4) @ 800 MHZ on my Ultimate X64 bit.

Installed flawlessly, but can someone please give me a logical answer as to why on my system properties it shows only 7,678MB of memory??

I thought X64 OS shows all memory, and I know my mobo can handle up to 8GB @800MHz.
Also, I have installed every single Windows update, and after the upgrade to 8GB, I can see a definite increase in performance.

Thanx:)

8GB is simply unnecessary with the technologies of today.
No application, game or even hardware does require such a quantity of RAM, which will only be useful in 4 to 5 years with 64bit applications... 4Gb is ideal and enough to run Vista 64 very well.

Runs great, even games like Crysis in 64bit.

I had 4GB, and it showed all 4GB, but I had the opportunity to upgrade to 8GB.
Assuming that if you were running a 64 bit operating system, it would show all 8GB.

I guess I'm ahead of the times.:)

Thanx.

Chances are that one or more of the devices on your motherboard are still using 32-Bit addressing on a hardware level. The usual suspects are graphics and/or hard disk controllers.

Vista shows the available system ram as reported by the BIOS. One of the small changes in SP1 will be that Vista reports the total installed memory. When you install Vista SP1, you'll see the full 8GB reported.

Oh, and don't let anyone tell you you "don't need 8GB memory". True, there are very few applications that can benefit from that much, but more physical memory allows you to have more applications active at the same time, without the need to use the page file.

I have also 8GB installed and it shows all 8 ..

I too have 8GB and all of my shows up. And how can someone say it's too much and has no purpose ? It's not uber geeky or anything, and with todays memory prices why limit your workflow. Besides, even if you don't chew up all of your extra memory Vista certainly still makes good use of it pre-caching programs.

Well, here's the update, I just installed SP1 FINAL and now it shows all 8 GB of RAM.

My large format image files (122 x 200cm @300dpi) are 4 to 6gb and even with 8gb ram Photoshop is still swapping to the hard drive which slows them down....There is no such thing as not enough ram. If you are creative, the more power you have the harder you'll push the system......

I just installed SP1 final on my Vista x64 Ultimate machine and it reports that I have 8GB (via control panel - system). Fantastic! Except that I physically only have 2GB of memory!!!

There's a bug here for sure!!

did you refresh ur scores?

I suppose you mean the Windows Experience score?
I hadn't thought to do so because my hardware hasn't changed and that shouldn't have anything to do with the reported ram.

Nonetheless, I tried it just now. My windows experience is still at 4.1 (proc setting AMD 64 3200+, everything else well over 5!). The ram still shows up as 8.0GB.

This must be a bug. I'll have to wait for MS to fix it in a windows automatic update.:(

im curious...did you have 8GB in there before?

No. My machine is a Shuttle SN85G4 of a few years ago. It was barebones and I had originally installed 1 GB in it.

It's ok, this is a bug, I'm an IT professional. All other system tools or applications still correctly reporting 2GB, as did Vista Ultimate x64 prior to my upgrade to service pack 1.

It's not a real problem. Microsoft may sort it out soon, or perhaps there was some kind of problem with my upgrade. Although, everything seemed to say it went sucessfully.

When I upgrade my memory to 4GB or more, it will probably sort itself out, or not matter if I go to 8GB! I am waiting for memory prices to drop a lot further.

Apart from a few early display driver glitches I've not had any problems with Vista, but I hardly run any Vista programs except Office 2007. I run almost everything under MS Virtual PC - XP, Ubuntu, Solaris and Windows 98! Microsoft VPC under Vista x64 is an amazing product.

Was gonna say the lost of memory even though in 64bit environment could be that your motherboard's "memory re-mapping" option is off in the BIOS (contirbutes to 4GB showing up as 3.2 ~ 3.5GB).

Some motherboards are switched on and off automatically and some must be changed manually.

Seeing that someone having 2GB with the update but showing 8GB......you can try and take out 2 sticks of your modules and see if there is actually is a bug!!!

For users with 8GB, I've switched off my paging file completely and seem to run alright but I've yet to run any benchmarks!!
