You could download and install the Windows Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft. This nifty utility serves as a guide for both hardware and software that will put you in the right direction. But it's a guide only, and it's scan results should not be taken as gospel.

Your best chance for success would be to go to the hardware manufacturers websites and check for yourself.

How old is your computer? Depending on the individual components, if it's 3 years old or more, then you might have a problem with x64 drivers, but chances are the CPU will be x64, especially if it's dual-core.

Re: Plan to get vista ultimate 64!! any advice?

Hello dzomlija. Here are my specs. MoBo ECS Nettle2 Chipset nVidia MCP61, Athlon 64 x2 6000+ CPU, 4 1GB DDR2 RAM in DIMM expandable to 8GB, I currantly have a 500GB 7200RPM WD HDD with x86 Home P. on it, but I intend to add a second internal HDD and put x64 Ultimate on that and migrate to that. My video card is GeForce 6150SE nForce 430, which is on the upgrade list. Do you forsee any problems I need to deal with before I start this project. Thank you for your time

Re: Plan to get vista ultimate 64!! any advice?

Hello Bare Foot Kid. Your specs are good, you may need to reduce your system temporarily to 2Gb of Ram to install x64 Vista, but after install you would be able to re-install your RAM. Some people have had problems trying o install Vista with the full 4Gb installed.

As far as migrateing your stuff from your old x86 install to your x64 install that may or may not work. Upgradeing to x64 from x86 does require a complely new install from the format up. Reinstallung all your apps my be nessasary. I've never tried it but it sounds shakey.

You probably should just save all your important files off the x86 partition and format it clean when you install your x64. Then reinstall your apps and updates and your done.

Good Luck..

You specs look good for a rock solid x64 setup. Some may argue that you install Vista x64 with 2GB or less memory, then add the rest when it's running ok.

I never had that problem with my system.

Re: Plan to get vista ultimate 64!! any advice?

Hello again dzomlija. Thank you for your response. I guess if I do have problems with the install I can always try less RAM. But from what I have been reading most people don't have trouble with a clean install.

Thats what I'm counting on. I still have to get the pieces to put this puzzle together. One other thing. Should I disable the other HDD or anything else before I start? Thank You!

my computer specs are in my sig but it's a few years old so that's why i'm not sure if x64 would be a good idea for it.
i think the only vista signed hardware i have is my wireless card which is a netgear wg311v3

Do like me, then if you have any problems you can still use your machine. Thats the whole point of me doing it this way. A second brand new HDD and a full retail copy of x64 Ultimate. I'll still have a machine to use while I work out any "bugs". Later
