problem with backup and restore

not sure exactly where this would go, but

I just recently got a new motherboard processor etc, and so i had to reinstall vista, well, i decided to go ahead and up to x64 so i backed up my hard drive under my current ultimate32bit and then formatted and installed ultimate64.

So i thought i'd do a restore of my drive's backup, so i popped in my install disc, clicked repair comp, clicked restore a backup, chose the backup i wanted, confirmed, then a box popped that said basically, "The windows restore has failed. This backup can be restored on this computer. Please use the correct Windows Recovery Envirnment (x64) WinRE."


So please, someone tell me, what can i do to get this to work! thanks

so you're trying to restore a 32bit OS into a x64 OS?

i don't think that can work...

Sorry, but restoring a 32 bit Vista complete PC backup on a 64 bit Vista will not work. They must be the same bit version. If you have individual backup files, they can be restored as long as they are not system files.

ok, that's what i was afraid of, is there anyhting i could do to recover files within the backup? or any way to (revert back to 32bit and) upgrade to 64bit without formatting the drive?

Sorry, no. The only way to go back and forth between one installed 32 bit and 64 bit versions is to do a clean install.

However, ;)

1. You could create a second partition on your hard drive
How to Shrink and Create a Partition with Disk Management in Vista

2. Restore the 32 bit Vista to that new partition drive letter.
How to Restore the Complete Computer from a Complete Backup and Restore Image in Vista

3. Copy the files you want to the 64 bit vista
4. Delete the partition and expand the 64 bit partition back to one drive again.
How to Delete and Extend a Partition with Disk Management in Vista

This way you wll not have to start completely over and make new backups and reinstall everything again.
