| Junior Member | Why 2 Program Files? Hi Just curious as to why Vista 64bit has 2 sets of Program files on C Drive? One is Program Files One is Program Files (x86) Everything I have installed loads into Program Files (x86) Also, I've noticed the same with Internet Exlporer and Internet Explorer 64 bit This isn't an upgraded pc, it came with Vista Premium 64 bit Thanks Brian |

| Administrator | Re: Why 2 Program Files? Hi Brian, In the 64 bit Vista, it's for: C:\Program Files = for installed 64 bit programs C:\Program Files (x86) = for installed 32 bit programs The 64 bit Vista has 32 bit and 64 bit versions of all the programs that it comes with for better compatibility. (EX: IE7, Windows Mail, Windows Sidebar, etc...) Hope this helps, Shawn |

| Junior Member | Re: Why 2 Program Files? Thanks Shawn for the info So, looks like I should just let Vista install the app or game where it thinks it needs to go based on their compatabilty with Vista rather than me forcing the app or game into a program file that it shouldn't be in resulting in a possible conflict So far, everything that I have installed has gone into the (x86) folder Brian |

| Member | Re: Why 2 Program Files? Brian, Yes, let the programs go where the default to. Most of the software you come across is 32 bit, and that's why it goes into the x86 folder I believe. Also, IE 64 bit is quite limited because most plug-ins like flash don't run in 64 bit. You'll likely end up using IE 32 bit. That's why you see two different shortcuts. Everything is normal. Dont worry, all this is transparent and you don't really need to pay any special attention. Paul |
