Latest recommendation on installing 8GB memory in a new Vista 64 install

Howdy,

May take the plunge on setting up Vista 64 on a new drive. I have 8gb installed currently in this XP box (in anticipation of Vista 64), and so was wondering if it is critical to remove two modules before installing Vista 64. What do you know?

As a precaution you could remove the extra sticks and then put them back when the OS is installed.
I have read a couple of post by people with errors above 2gig installed.
I dont know if ms have put out a hotfix yet but that will not apply yet as you have not installed the OS.

You can try the install with all ram in but if vista fails to install it will take longer to sort it out, than removing the two sticks in the first place.

Thank you kindly, and I think what you seems makes sense. Pretty easy to just remove two modules so that is what I will do. I did hear there is a hotfix or update that resolves this issue, but as you say it's a fresh install.

Got it with 2, sucked. Upgraded to 4, good but I wanted great so I got 8. So, 4 after my initial. No problems so far, only had it for about a month and i haven't had time to sit down and test to see if my system is in fact using the entire 8gb. It registers, but that doesn't mean its using it all. I'll get to that soon with break comming up and all.

I guess it will use it *if* there is a reason to use it, ie if your software needs it and was designed to look for it. I bought the extra modules to go to 8 only because I plan to use Gigastudio 4 which is designed to use 8+ gb . . .

Thanks for that reply!;)

Yeah, the only thing that i can think of at the moment that could possibly go up to 8gb is my Adobe CS3 suite... and thats a big maybe.

No problem.

I have CS3 Master Collection, and lemme tell you, that's the only time you will ever come close to using all that RAM, and no lag whatsoever...compared to alot of ppl I know their system just can't handle CS3.
When they see what I am capable of doing, their jaw drops lmao.

How much it'll use depnds on the applications and what your doing with them. For most users 4GB is more than enough but having extra is certainly not a waste. You will find your HDD is used/accessed less by the OS as it wont be needing to use PF as much and in general apps will load runn faster.

Vista 64 will pre-cache often used programs into un-used RAM and really speed some things up. I multi-task alot and also use up quite a bit of memory but I've never been able to eat-up more than a tiny bit over 6GB, most the time I use a tiny bit over 4GB. But it's so nice to do everything I want and more and still have a little headroom.

Wayne did you have all 8gb installed from the get go?

My Computer

Most users can get away with 4gb unless using photographic software of mayby video editing software that requires the ram. Music sfotware may also use the ram.

Did I have 8GB from the get go ?

For the install of Vista, no I didn't. I was waiting on the ram from overseas. I couldn't wait so I borrowed some memory from one of my other computers to run this one up. But the day after I made this computer and installed Vista the new memory turned up lol.

So my 8GB has been in the system from the day after the build. If your worried about doing an install with the whole 8GB in it then just take 4GB out and do the install with 4GB in and then soon as Vista is installed drop the other 2 rails/banks in and enjoy.
