Hard drive running like crazy for no reason

Can anyone tell me how to determine what I have running that makes my hard drive run like mad

I hit ctrl alt del and clicked the processes tab, theres a ton of crap in there but I can't figure out what the culprit is

Tried shutting the pc down and rebooting, same thing

Thanks in advance for your help

Can be a number of things,
Virus checker.
Spyware checker.
Indexing
Bad Sector.
Failing Harddrive.
Page file being used (which I doubt in your case)

Press the windows key and R
type in cmd
in the console type in tasklist >c:task.txt
click on start
click on your user name at the top of the menu
Open task.txt with wordpad/notepad
Copy and paste the contents into a post so we can see what is going on.

My Computer

There does not seem to be anything using a large amount of resourses.
You have avg running, which does scan when the computer is idle.
How old is your computer, indexing can make the harddrive seem to be running alot.
Have you had any updates lately?
Does the HD activity quieten down after you have done something on the drive?
Try renameing a file to see if the activity slows.
Have you had any errors on the harddrive log file (in error logs).
Have you got s.m.a.r.t turned on?
Have a look at your prefetch directory.
Try removing 4gb of Ram. Your computer will load alot into memory at startup because you have 8gig of ram.

I was reading thru the forums for this very issue. L just added I/O reads and Writes to the Task Manager process list, and it appears that the LSASS process is the culprit for me. Comes and goes. If the machine has been up for a long time, it's like a slow drum beat. Very annoying. CSRSS sometimes plays a back beat with it.

15Krpm 300Gb disks raid 10 makes it noisy.

My Computer

My Vista 64bit also runs like mad right after boot up. Scary noises. Then it cools down and run normal.

Here is the tasklist during the noisy run. Can the experts here help me out?

I am running Gateway GT5436E on 64bit Intel G965 Love Valley motherboard.
I can't find a 64bit BIOS update. Still using MQ96510J.15A.0375.2007 BIOS, which I think is a 32bit BIOS. Could that be the problem? Can I use MQ96510J.86A BIOS?

My boot is extremely long like 5 minutes for the Microsoft load up. Help, please. Thanks!!!

My Computer

Hi Brian, this may have nothing to do with your problem but over the past couple of months I've been trying to use Internet Explorer 8.
As soon as I downloaded and installed it 2 original vista sidebar gadgets had pinkish surrounds and the clock would only run for about 9 seconds.
It seemed that the sidebar was working overtime to get loaded as my cpu was running constantly at around 50%, and I was doing nothing at all.

After uninstalling IE 8 my desktop has gone back to idling at around 5% as it should be.
If you have IE 8 installed you could have a similar issue.

I'm only a novice with computer stuff but thought it worth a mention.

All the best jonty21:confused:
