System Restore Won't Work

First, I have Vista Ultimate 32 bit.
My problem is I can't get the "System Restore" to work. Every time I set it to do a system restore, it appears to go through all the right motions. Then after it shuts down and restarts itself, I get an error message:

"System restore did not complete successfully."
"An unspecified error occurred during system restore."

It goes on to say that the computers settings have not changed.
What's going on? I've tried several different checkpoints including one that I had manually set myself. None of them work, I always get the same error message.
Anybody else ever run into this problem?

yes I have but I have noticed that System Restore in Vista is not worth much. It's not like xp where you can go back several days or even a week or two. From what I've seen you can only go back about 24 hrs. ... just my 2cents...

This is not true, because I once picked out a restore point way back a month or so ago.

One option would be to do a system repair using the Vista DVD, depending on whats wrong. This may help your situation if restore is not available to you.

I seem to recall that if you are running Norton Anti-virus and the Norton Files under Norton Options are protected the system restore will return that message. I remember having that problem with Windows XP, I don't know if it applies to Vista 32 bit. It does not apply to Vista 64bit which I am running.

thank you for that info....my computer is only a month old and it won't do a system restore...it has a free 60 day trial of Nortons on it.....

I will delete that...put on a new AV and see what happens...hopefully I can do a system restore

I wonder if this has been resolved, I have this same problem?

If you have Norton or similar anti virus program, In Norton, go into settings, and untick Norton tamper proof box, then try again good luck.

Thanks Patch, Someone, (from these forums) advised me to try system restore in the Safe Mode! I did and it worked.
