I have always built my own rigs except for this one a gateway 7020 which has a phenom 9600 nvidia 8800gt 3 gigs of ram 500 gig ata hard drive 8 usb ports tv tuner realtek hd sound and is so quiet except for the hard drive making noise thru my speakers.The speakers are not next to the computer I have the latest drivers so I am at a loss what is causing this.I am using vista 32 bit and I must say this is the fastest loading and shutting down computer I have ever owned something like 45 seconds and this shocks me from some of the posts I have been reading so back to the noise thru my speakers.....any ideas Thanks in advance.Great site by the way as I have been a lurker for a month.I will add some more dribble as vista gave me a 5.9 score.

The problem is your hard drive is making vibrations which are causing noise on your speaker wires...thus your hard drive 'noise' makes it way to your actual speakers. The hard drive probably needs to be reseated or tightened down so its not vibrating the interior of your tower. It can also lead to other issues like bad sectors because of the vibrations.

There are a number of possibilities that can cause this particular problem:
- The power connectors to your hard drives are not properly connected. Try disconnecting the power connectors and re-seating them.
- The power lines from your PSU are crossing the signal cable from your hard drives. Try re-positioning the power and signal cables to run parallel with each other. Keeping the cables inside your computer neat and tidy does more than just help with airflow.
- You are using a low rated PSU, that is barely able to keep the entire machine running, and the power being drawn by the hard disks is interfering with the sound.
- If your speakers are equipped with their own volume controls, try setting the volume level in the Windows Volume Control to between 1/3 and 1/2, and then up the volume on the speakers physical volume control. Sometimes keeping the Windows Volume Control at max allows the interference to come through.
