is there a ddr2 to ddr3 converter?

Hi chilloh

my brother has a new mobo but it only supports ddr3 and he want to use the ddr2 is it possible?

it only supports ddr3 - You just answered your own question!

Sorry but you will have very bad results if you try!

What's the difference between DDR2 and DDR3 anyway?

That's not what I asked...I asked what the difference between the two are as obviously DDR3 is the next generation.

DDR3 is clocked faster then DDR2, but usually has higher latency.

Example: My DDR2 800 Corsair RAM runs at a latency of 4

The counterpart in DDR3 may run at 6 or higher.

There are trade offs between the two. DDR2 runs at 1.8~2.0 volts(core)

DDR3 around 1.4~1.6 volts.

Also DDR2 and DDR3 are keyed differently, so if your MB says DDR3 you will not be able to insert a stick of DDR2 without doing physical damage to your MB.

@chilloh Ask your bro to try and replace the MB for a DDR2 one if he hasnt already.
I think even with the converter itll turn out to be expensive and converters arent always reliable especially when you're dealing with RAM Voltages.
If he cannot replace it,its better he goes and buys DDR3 rather than converting .......shud have seen the MB specs before he bought it.

after reading that posted link about the DDR to DDR2 converter..

it seems like it would only work with motherboard chipsets that support both ram types

correct me if i'm wrong people.

if he can afford then just go with the DDR3 memory.

he will be so much more happier with it within the next year or so when more programs utilize the faster memory speeds.

Hold on. Programs don't have to do anything special to "utilize" the faster memory speeds. Programs don't check for the type of memory installed. Faster memory is faster memory. Faster memory is automatically utilized by software just like faster CPU's are. So the "within the next year or so" comment makes no sense and is false.

wouldn't it make sense though?

like how having more memory and faster memory, programs would load faster?

ok then tell me how it didn't make sense?

what would be the point of there being different speeds of memory if it didn't affect the speed of the computer?
and what is the point of upgrading memory from DDR to DDR2 if DDR3 if there wasn't a difference between them?

But that is not what you said. Here it is again:

"he will be so much more happier with it within the next year or so when more programs utilize the faster memory speeds."

Look at your words. You say that "within the next year or so when more programs utilize the faster memory speeds."

My comments were directed at your text that said more programs would utilize the faster memory speeds in the next year or so.

Again, programs don't have to do anything special to "utilize" the faster memory speeds. Programs don't check for the type of memory installed. Faster memory is faster memory.
