Guys,

Ive tried doing dual boot, with xp pro first then vista64, i had some problems with xp after i had updated vista64 to the latest version.

At the time XP would freeze.

So i gave up and stuck with vista64, since ive only go vista64 can i now install xp on the same hdd creating a new partition and will i be able to dual boot.

Or should i stick with vista64, what i most worried about is all my games and apps, what do you all think ?

Over a year ago, when I first got started with Vista x64, I also dual-booted between XP and Vista x64. I didn't have any problems with either after that, but the 3 weeks or so that followed my Vista installation, I realized that I hadn't booted into XP for anything of consequence, and that Vista x64 was working for me even better than I anticipated.

So I proceeded to backup the new data that was added in that time, formatted all my hard disks, and re-installed only Vista x64. I haven't looked back since.

All the games I play, such as the now classic Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction, Empire Earth, and even Tetris 4000 works better than they ever did under XP. The newer Tomb Raider games, Legend and Anniversary are also operating very well. My list of larger applications like Microsoft Office, Borland Delphi, Adobe Premiere Elements are what I use every day, and they work perfectly. The same can be said about the utilities, such as WinZip, MainConcept Encoder and MagicISO.

It all really depends on what you want to install. Most mainstream consumer software packages (large and small) will work without issues. The problem suites are usually the proprietary software packages such as those used for cell phones, or some other specialist tasks.

My recommendation to you? Stick with Vista x64.

Well is it possible "Darth," to pop my old Hard Drive out of my old machine and just pop it in this new one? I'm not so much as interested in keeping the XP pro as I'm just plain lazy. Along with my 8 bazillion games, I have a bunch of article, tons of research and press releases as well as countless hours of digital voice recordings of interviews that I really don't want to take a chance of ruining.

I mainly built (am building I guess would be more accurate) this one to learn how to: A). Learn how to do it, and
B). for a gaming platform.

I've been told that the old switcheroo of the Hard drive isn't exactly as easy as all that...........

Moving hard drives with an XP installation to another computer is looking for trouble, and invariably leads to a re-install.

My experience with Vista has been quite different. When I recently replaced my computer, I did just that, and Vista booted successfully from the old installation. It went absolutely nuts finding new drivers, and hadto be re-activated, but it did work. But just in case, make a backup image of the drive in question...

Thanks guys,

im gonna stick with vista, i did a small upgrade to the following

AMD64 6400+ 3.2Ghz Black Edition AM2
ASUS Crosshair 590SLI
8Gb G-Skill 4 x 2GB PC2-8500 DDR2 1066 Dual Channal
BFG Ageia PhysX card
Creative X-Fi Gamer Fatality Pro 64mb x-ram
BFG OC2 8800GTX

Since i have so much ram i might as well stick with vista64, only thing i hate since im using a 28" Digital Widescreen Television CRT (no room) i only get 25hz refresh rate unlike xp i had 119hz for desktop and gaming, are there any programs out there where i could set it higher, or i might just have to wait for better drivers.

Sorry bro, I don't know the ins and outs of webhosting, but the post loaded for like five minutes and I figured it was hung up and went to another site while it was still loading. I guess somehow that made it post without record?

Darth, I think I'm just going to leave my other computer alone. It has plenty of juice for researching and writing and to play the games that are on it. All I need to do is find some sort of splitter or router for my monitor so I don't have to plug and unplug to switch computers. If I need something from it I can move it with a flash drive. Thanks for confirming what every one keeps telling me about moving a hard drive from on Mobo to another.

Hi Bubba,

The device you are referring to is called a KVM. It allows you to connect a Keyboard, Video monitor and Mouse to more than one PC and to switch from one machine to the other with the flick of a switch. The older models were only able to cope with VGA monitors and PS/2 keyboards and mice, although modern units can cope with USB and DVI interfaces. Some can also cope with a combination of connections, as well as audio.
You can buy these devices from your local computer hardware stockist.

Cool. Thanks. I didn't know they made one for the all three. I have a cordless KB and mouse that I don't mind swapping out. I actually like the cordless KB better but its crap for online gaming. I'll go see what I can find.

That's pretty much what I did Bubb when I put together this new machine for Vista 64.

I kept the old hard drive and bought an external USB HD case which only cost $30 (australian). Popped the old harddrive from the XP machine "as is" into the USB external casing and had access to all the 1000's of files and images I wanted.

Once I was happy with how Vista was going I deleted XP from the external drive through Vista and anything else I didn;t really need. Installed the bare essentials on the Vista I needed. And everything worked fine and I had myself an external 500G HD for storage.
