DEP stopping Photoscreensaver.scr

I have a Vista 32bit PC that has ran the photoscreensaver.scr with no issues for a few months, but all of the sudden it keeps getting blocked by DEP (it always gets this error on the first time it goes into the screen saver after starting up and only random after that first time). The following is what I get in the error report:

Problem signature

I made the following changes to my system around the time this issue began (no idea if this is relevant):
  1. Removed Norton trial (via the removal tool from Norton) and installed Avast (free version) for virus protection
  2. Uninstalled Ulead VideoStudio 10 which had been giving me the message that Vista would run in basic color mode due to the Ulead software (I never noticed any issues while it was installed, just got tired of the message everytime I started the PC)
  3. Removed Avast (thinking maybe it was the issue)
  4. Installed McAfee (free from my web provider) and still no help
I'm going mad trying to figure this out

My wife likes having the pics on the photoscreensaver, or I would just use a different one!

Hello DarthDennis,

Welcome to the Forums!

Have you tried to make exceptions for your Program(s)?

View attachment 3586

If not give it a try and let us know.
It's not Avast (also free). You should use that instead of McAfee!

Ted -

Thanks for the quick reply. The exceptions only accept executible files and wont accept photoscreensaver.scr as an exception. Am I doing that wrong?

I'm going to check my video codex to see if when I removed my video editing software it messed that up. I do have avi files in with my jpg's.

Also, I will go back to Avast. I just did that in an attempt to see if it was causing the issue. It creates some sort of file backup and you can run that during the screensaver and thought that might be tripping the DEP. Obviously not....

One more thing, you have to register with Avast and insert the registration
number they give you into the program even though it's free.

One of my first concerns would be "why is a screen-saver trying to access another process's memory-space", since that is the ONLY reason that DEP should be giving you grief.

You talked about removing your AntiVirus suites... but said nothing about scanning the screensaver for virii. Is it possible that it is infected? Have you tried to find a copy of the screensaver from another vista machine and copy it over?

I scanned the entire computer with both Avast and McAfee with no warnings. I have access to one other machine with Vista and will try that.

Solved...Maybe:confused:

I reinstalled my video editing software and it seems to have fixed the problem. At least no DEP warnings all day. I'll have to keep an eye on it. No idea other than video codex as I had seen a post somewhere where the photo screen saver tripped DEP due to avi files in with the photos.

I also got Avast reinstalled.

I'll post back if this didn't fix the issue.
