Out Of The "STONE AGE"

Don't know, just don't about Vista and IE7; got all updates except SP1, did tweaking out the kazoo based on information obtained through here and other sites (haven't done that many registry backups in 10 years) and still I'm not too happy, mostly with Vista; I can put up with the pecularities of IE7 but find the constant restrictions, slowness and downright assinine behavior of Vista unacceptable; in fact I wish I had never gotten to this point. Now, I came out of the "Stone Age" as stated, from Windows 98SE, IE6, an AMD400 processor, 128MB Ram and 8 GB hard drive with Xanadoo 784 kbps wireless; but folks IT WORKED! I'm just an average internet user, no gaming, no mega downloads, just browsing, e-mail, an occasional fax and limited videos all of which I could do with more speed, ease and less complications than Vista is providing me with now. I graduated to a Dell, 500 Gig HD, 2 Gig Memory, Intel Core 2 4500 processor; hell, with a 22" LCD Flatpanel monitor for under $800.00 I thought it was a bargain! Now I wish I had spent just a fraction of that on a new motherboard (old one fried) and gone on for a few more years with that. Still, I'm very grateful for all the help from here (tutorials), tried SP1 (thanks, no!) and had my "insanity weeks" as another member had; restored to factory condition twice and am now wondering what will come next; certainly no SP1 for me, I finally can get all my external drives (USB) to show on the system and with tweak info from here there has been an improvement but overall I'm still disappointed. Sorry guys, just had to get this off my chest.

I'm sorry yer having so many problems. Seems to me, I recall people having troubles with win 98 when it first came out and again with windows xp. Whenever a new operating system comes out, there is some growing pains. I think in a couple years people will be lamenting the release of Windows 7 and wishing they could all go back to Vista. Just my 2 cents.

I personally run Vista and never had any problems except when running Vista installed on Dell computers.
Each time i formatted the HDD including their "partition" and made a new install with unfortunately a new license.

Seems like this time around installation of SP1 went flawlessly (I hope!). Put Windows in 'Selective Startup" downloaded and installed SP1 (a bit tedious) through Windows Update and I'll be d*#+%!, it worked; my external drives are visible and accessible and so far I see no glitches. Just don't understand what caused my external drives not to be recognized after the first try which by the way was not through Windows Update but through a Stand Alone Download of SP1.

I just got a Dell 530S for my TV and it runs fine. I added many programs and customized it to my liking and it is on my wireless N network. This being said, I have a few other computers with Vista that I cut my teeth on, and it wasn't all that wonderful of an experience. Now that I know what's up it is much easier.
Once you restore from the Dell partition get enough of your settings on it to get on the internet and get your email. Get all the updates for the hardware and OS. Mine needed a BIOS update which should have been done by Dell, but it shows that you have to check more things than you might think. I upgraded it (BIOS) through the Dell support software and it was quite easy.
Once you have it set up with no other software on it, use it like that for a while. It is going to act slow and use the HDD more than you really want it to as it indexes the disc.
If you try to install while it is getting itself together it may act even slower. This will be a good time to insure that you are using the latest installers for all your programs, which are hopefully Vista compatible. If you are trying to use your Win98SE stuff your misery will be exacerbated. Most things are compatible, if you go to the company site they will usually mention it.
Hardware is sometimes not compatible, due to no driver support. Sorry, but your printer or scanner may not work. I had to get a new scanner and printer, which was kind of cool because I could afford it at the time, if this is not your situation it will be less cool.
It's good you mention that you gave it a couple weeks, but your couple weeks starts again with each reinstall.
Sounds like you got a nice rig for a great price. Believe me it will run. Once it learns what you want from it, it will tailor itself to you.
Calling Dell tech support can sometimes be quite frustrating, I personally have given it up.
I hope this helps. I know you probably do some of this stuff already, but you never know.

The truth is that now every thing's running fine, much better than I expected after giving SP1 another try. And yes, I did use the Vista Compatibility Tool or whatever you call it to install WORD and EXCEL from my old OFFICE PRO edition without any glitches whatsoever, although I installed that on a second drive. I get the occasional IE7 crash, a blue screen once in a Blue Moon but keep getting these ERROR and WARNING notices in EVENT VIEWER. Info on some sites says to just ignore them if things are running o.k., perhaps that's what I need to do. I feel much better about VISTA and my system now that I have SP1 behind me and there's no way I am ever going back to "Factory Condition". Am with Xanadoo Wireless at the time (784kbps) but on speed tests am never doing better than 450-500; supposed to get AT&T Dry Loop tomorrow (up to 6Mbps), perhaps that'll make everything more enjoyable.
