Newbie Question #3

Hello all,

I was looking at this new Tutorial Brink created yesterday;

and it occurred to my little newbie brain that if one could dl/save the SP1 standalone installer
to the desktop, that I could dl/save it to one of my partitions i.e. E:\Programs\(Folder Name)
so that if/when (probably when if I don't quit "experimenting") I have to reinstall I will have
a good clean copy of SP1 on hand and not have to go to WU to get it.

Would someone please advise me if this is a good or bad idea! If it's possible?
Or could it cause unforeseen future problems.

I actually just did something like that a week ago, I had downloaded SP1 standalone when it was released and it has been sitting in my "Downloads" folder. Well my boot hard drive broke last week and so I was forced to do a clean install on my good hard drive, after installing vista I ran the SP1 standalone straight from my "Downloads" folder and never had to mess with all the other older updates (worked awesome since i have dial up).
I'm not sure if this is possible, or legal, but you might even be able to store it on a CD/DVD for a back up.
Long story short yes it worked for me.

Hi Ted,

Creating the SP1 slipstream DVD will allow you to use that DVD to run a Repair install (Update Install) again since you cannot use a regular Vista installation DVD ro run a Repair install on Vista with SP1 installed. Plus, it lets you install both Vista and SP1 at the same time during a clean install. That's all.

If you just wanted to have SP1 handy to install after installing Vista, then you could store the standalone installer on a separate partition, drive, or CD/DVD.

LOL It nearly always helps Shawn. I say nearly because I'm sure somewhere at some time you were wrong even if I haven't seen it lol.

I had to comment for two reasons:

1.) To say that anytime I see you post I check the thread so I can learn something, and:

2.) I didn't know about that repair thing with the SP1. It makes sense now that when I was using the OEM Vista WITHOUT the SP1 that I thought the "repair" option was useless and now that I traded it in for the version I have which included the SP1 that the repair option worked like it was magic. I wish I had know this last night when I was talking to Gunther about which version of Vista 64 he should buy..........

You are a fount of information Shawn. I for one really appreciate the time you spend helping us. Whatever your paying job is I can feel confident saying that they in no way pay you nearly what you are worth.

Brink, this is what I want to do! I don't have a Vista disc of any kind just an OEM D:\Recovery partition. :cry:

Before long I'm going to get a copy of x64 Ultimate SP1!

i thought about slipstreaming, but since someones ran off with my 32bit dvd i think ill ring up ms & see if i can get it replaced making sure sp1 is on it.

Hello y'all,

Well here it is all saved and backed up to DVD.
Now all I need is a reason to use it.
I guess I'll have to "experiment" some more!

On this setup it has to update its self before it can search for updates!

Hey Ted,

Slipstreaming is good because you dont need to waste your time installing SP1 separately from the Vista installation, Looking back at the KB articles with the bugs they have fixed since RTM I would say its a better Idea to have it slipstreamed with SP1 so its all updated and working good by the time the installation has finished...There are no drawbacks in slipstreaming the installation.

Hello dmex, how you doing?

I would rather do the slipstream, if nothing else just for the experience!
But I can only do what I can with what I have for now.
A copy of x64 Ultimate SP1 is the next order of business!
I'll slipstream SP2 into that when it's released.

Thats a shame, I dont know why they continue to use these recovery partitions. Down here in AUS you can ask for the original installation DVD during purchase since its illegal for PC distributors not to include the DVD or we can have them remove the Windows installation entirely saving you the cost buying a broken OS.

At least now I know that the standalone will install on this machine with no problems
and it only took twenty minutes!

I found that "experimenting" with registry cleaners is a bad idea... :rolleyes:

Thats a shame, I dont know why they continue to use these recovery partitions. Hey Ted,

lol I remember mentioning something about registry cleaners...

In the US you should still be able to get them to remove Windows from the machine before you buy both the crippled no-dvd Vista and the machine, you can save a few hundred off the price :cool:

(they legally have to remove it upon request)

Hey Ted,

Yeah ususally once or twice a month I have to reformat my comp after I mess something up...

Tuneup utilites has a good feature set and registry cleaner, Ive been using it for a few years...

Howdy dmex,

That's the nice thing about the "recovery partition" from the time I boot into F11 till the time
I'm back on a working desktop is less than 30 minutes (bloatware :mad:

is a PITA) though!

This install may be the best one so far, not one DEP crash yet!

I'm going to check into this one!
