Cannot do a Repair Install with OEM disk

I am running Vista Home Premium and want to do a "repair install." I have an OEM DVD with Vista. I have performed the repair process in the past (I think it was called Upgrade), but now that I have installed SP1, it won't work. I slipstreamed a DVD with SP1 according to the tutorial, but it still indicates that the existing version of Vista is newer than the one on the slipstreamed DVD and says that the upgrade functionality is disabled.

I noticed on the tutorial that you need a Retail version of Vista to slipstream with SP1. Is the OEM version different than the Retail version? Is that why I cannot do a Repair Install?

Thanks for your comments.

Ted,

Thanks for the link, but I used that link to create my slipstreamed Vista with SP1. The finished product doesn't allow me to do a repair install. I suspect it is because I have an OEM version of Vista. Is that the problem?

Hello again philgoff,

As extreme as it sounds; you may be able to uninstall SP1 do the 'repair' with the original disc
and then reinstall SP1. You can dl/save this so you have it when you need it.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (Installer) for 32bit

Just a thought!

Later  Ted

EDIT: Yes it's the 'OEM' disc.
NOTE: You must have a Vista Express or Retail installation DVD to do this. If you have a OEM Recovery installation DVD that came with your computer instead, then it will most likely only be a clone of the hard drive with Vista allowing you to only do a clean install with it instead. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

I had exactly the same problem, Philgoff, with exactly the same issues. I have a store-bought full OEM installer disc (from Fry's), NOT a "recovery" disc, and I made a slipstream disc according to the instructions (to include SP1), and I'm having the same problem: the "upgrade" option is grayed out, i.e., unavailable and it also tells me that I need a newer version disc. What to do from here, Bare Foot Kid?

Go to fry's a DEMAND that they give you an Sp1 disk lol. They have them in their tech section. I know because they gave me one when I bought an OEM copy of Vista (which I returned lol). Actually you might have better results if you sucked up and asked politely than if you demanded lol.

Hello guys,

You can try that, or these. Make sure you haven't done this....

See post #4 above; then maybe try some of the options in this Tutorial!
(see NOTE: option B)

Like I said above it's just a suggestion!
Keep me informed as to the outcome.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

I uninstalled SP1 via the control panel and then my original OEM DVD (purchased from Newegg) allowed me to do a Repair Install. The whole process took several hours. Once complete, I reinstalled SP1. So now I am up and running with a clean copy of Vista Home Premium.

Glad you got this sorted. I really thought it was impossible to do a repair install using an OEM disk.. How exactly did you do this again? I've read that you can't, I swear I did lol..

XEN00b,

I don't have much to add to my previous post. I just uninstalled SP1 and then put in my oriiginal DVD of Windows Vista. That resulted in my "Upgrade" (which is the equivalent of Repair Install) to work just fine. I did check to see if my slipstreamed version of Vista plus SP1 worked and it did also. I wish I had used the slipstreamed DVD instead of the original Visat DVD since it may have saved me some time in reloading SP1.

My Computer

I see.

I'll note that just in case I ever find myself in your shoes. Thanks for the tip.
