Vista Tutorial - Vista Versus XP

In the new Computers Can you Install Windows XP Over top of Vista --If you rather have XP ???

if you're talking about just putting the xp disc in and installing xp from vista it won't work...

it will say you have a newer version of windows installed already.

what you will have to do is boot from the xp installation disc and format the drive that vista is installed on and then continue the setup from there.

No reason to dual boot. Install Windows Vista and if there's any chance that an application doesn't work in Vista then use VirtualBox and install Windows XP in a VM. Run the application in there. Case closed.

I have the same issue, will I run into any issues if I try to do a clean install of xp over an installation of vista? new to this forum, hope i'm posting right...

Yes, assuming XP drivers are available for your hardware. The most problematic devices are SATA drivers. The best place to start in finding the needed drivers is with your OEM's XP support for computers of, or close to, the same model as yours if available.

ok, so i should verify my components and make sure they are all compatible with xp and make sure i get the drivers from laptop manufacturer? correct? hopefully then, smooth sailing? if there is such a thing...


I would really like to give Vista a chance, but I just hear so much about the errors and issues going on with it. Any news on new service packs or updates to fix any of the issues?

You really should just try it. I'm running the 64bit version of Home Premium and it's been running very smoothly. It's actually more reliable than my XP machine (which also has good hardware). I think the problem with most people, including myself, is that Vista came out and everybody started hating on it which created a wagon for other to ride on. I built my computer in this last Dec. and I wasn't sure whether to install XP or Vista because of what I had read from the Vista "haters". Of course some things will be done a bit differently than in XP because this is a new OS, and although Vista was kind of buggy in the very beginning, it is much more stable and reliable than when it was released.

To sum it up, Vista's been pretty good and even better than my XP computer. Give it a shot. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Thanks for your post. I think that you highline all general stories how Vista is bed. Number years ago I remember similar opinions about XP.
About 2 years ago above and beyond all negative opinion about Vista32 I loaded it to my comp. During a first few weeks it was bed, lot of confirmation, administration, security etc. I was thinking many times goes back to XP. Slowly I learn, I understand more and more about this OS.

Today I decided to load my new beauty by Vista Ultimate 64.
Now, thanks to this Forum I know where to go with my future problems.
