mailto: URL opens with Gmail site instead of T. Bird

When I click on a mailto: URL, instead of Thunderbird opening up a blank email to type, I get forwarded to Gmail to compose my email. I have checked my default program settings in Vista and it is supposed to be Thunderbird that handles the mailto: URL. I just looked through my Gmail settings and can find no way to disable this annoying "feature".

I do not have the Gmail extension installed and can find no settings which pertain to this in the Gmail site or the Google Toolbar.

Help appreciated.

Did you install any third party gmail program ?

None. The only thing from Google I have installed at all is the Google Toolbar on my Firefox, which I've had before and has never caused this.

If you want to change the default mailto behaviour goto Tools> Options> Programs tab> Set Programs> Set Program Access and Computer Defaults in Internet Explorer.

I just checked that and my email is set to use the current email program, which would be Thunderbird, since I designated it as the default program when I installed it.

Then, go there in registry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto
You should have something like that when using a different email client than the standard windows mail:



In the command key specify the default path for thunderbird.

I checked the registry key and it was set to Winmail. I chose Thunderbird as my default mail program through Default Programs in Control Panel. I checked again in the registry key and it was now labeled Thunderbird. Then I clicked a mailto URL again and it still opens a Gmail tab. Weirdness.

Have you this key in registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Google Gmail

Strange that you did not use any third party prog to make Gmail your default email client.
How did you do?
