32 bit vs 64 bit

I am trying to use a web based product and I was told that it would not support 64 bit Vista OS and that I would have to switch to the 32 bit Vista OS, is there a patch that I can download to allow me to run 32 bit programs? Do I need to go out and buy the 32 bit Vista and install it? Thanks

Re: 32 bit vs 64 bit

Yes you can run 32-bit apps under Vista x64. it uses the built in Wow64 layer, you don't need to install anything extra. But, not all applications will function as desgined, you may run into some issue. Applications that require a driver to be installed will not work as you cannot install 32-bit drivers on a 64-bit platform. As well programs that require kernel mode access, such as security related software will not function properly.

When you say "web-based" product, as the client are you just connecting through a web browser or is there client software to install? If it just requires a web browswer you should be ok, but the company may not provide you support if anything goes wrong.

Your question is rather generic since it all depends on which progam you're trying to run. Some 32bit programs work well on Vista 64, some don't. It would help to know which program you're talking about.

Vista Ultimate 64 will run 32 bit applications thanks too WoW64 layer. I am using Vista 64 and installed 32 bit applications without any problems. All applications and software I put on in a 32 bit mode are running fine....
Try I few and make your own decision

While I agree with you for the most part, I can assure you that not all 32bit applications run or run "correctly" in a 64bit environment! Example: Norton Anti-Virus 2008 loses it's ability to scan individual folders on the fly when right clicking, i.e right click a folder and tell it to scan! Under Vista 64 that option is gone, where in Vista 32 it is present!!! And one other thing, just because a program installs, doesn't mean it's fully fuctional!!! Again, NAV 2008!

My suggestion would be to search the manufactures website or call their tech support. Remember: returning software "after" it's opened can be a real pain!!!

Just trying to save to OP some headaches.

Re: 32 bit vs 64 bit

You will need to replace utilities to go 64-bit. I would research all your software and hardware before doing it. Other option is buy a full 64-bit version and dual boot 32-bit and 64-bit.
