System Restore Problem

Hi

I have been having a problem with 'System Restore' I have tried to restore my sytstem

to different restore points but always end up getting the same message:

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files
and settings were not changed. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. You might try System Restore again and choose a different restore point."

My OS is Vista business, 32bit, Service Pack 1. Installed on a Sony Vaio NR21M laptop.

200gb H/D & 2.0.gb ram.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem & could offer some advice.

Many thanks

Harry

Did you get any error numbers? Do you have any Norton/Symantec sofware installed try this link
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantecdoc1.html

If you receive an error while restoring, then use it from safe mode and it should work fine. To get into Safe mode, you can reboot and use the F8 key right before Windows starts up.
Or maybe this will help you
For the 32bit and 64bit question, you can refer to the following thread:
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2340069&SiteID=17

Hope some of it will help

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I don't have any Norton installed. The error message did not supply me with a specific error number it said An unspecified error occurred. I am running AVG? I am going to try a few things that I found out on the Bert Kinney 'Microsoft Most Valuable Professional' website System Restore in Windows Vista:

I will report back to the forum if I find a solution to this problem.

Thanks for the suggestions & any further would be welcome.

Hi, edintrouble, and welcome to the forums.

Did you go into Vista and manually make a new restore point, and then see if the new restore point works? XP may have already messed up those SRPs before you got the chance to hide Vista from it....

My Computer

Hi eddie,
It should come from a driver conflict, reason why i asked you to try in safe mode.
Now, unfortunately the infos i have do not allow me to point on a specific driver??

Run a sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt, does not hurt and could resolve the problem.

Vista is a fantastic OS when you know how important things work, unfortunately, many drivers aren't fully compatible and some progs, even edited by big known companies are not fully compatible with Vista, mainly due to UAC.

Do you have a restore point after the SP1 install? Did you try it with your administrator account instead of your user account?

Hi Guys

I've been following the threads, I haven't been able to fix problem yet. I agree with edintrouble though, I don't want to have to access 'Safe Mode' every time I want to do a 'System Restore' & really we shouldn't have to.

I am running Zonealarm latest version for Vista & AVG, I read something on another forum (that I can't find now) that Zonealarm could be the problem. I have Vista business & SP1. I will find a way of fixing this problem & when I do will obviously post it up, problem I am having at moment is time - I haven't been able to focus my mind on this problem to sort it. System Restore is quite an important utility for getting out of trouble so we'll get it sorted.

Don't give up on Vista edintrouble I think it is basically sound. I was reluctant to let go of XP-Pro initially, but am generally glad I did.

Regards

Harry

Agree, but are a driver or a AV software problems due to Vista?

If you google "sysRestorePoint.exe" you will see a MVP has created a little program that you can run manually or set up a schedule in order to create restore points.

I use it as the only way in Vista to create restore points

I have to ask you this after reading this response...
youngharry said:

If you're using System Restore that much, I think it's time we ask ourselves "Why" am I having to restore so many times...and work on that area a bit more.

With that said, System Restore can be a very touchy operation and many things can cause it not to run properly when booted into normal windows, so Safe Mode is often needed in these cases, just like Sydney mentioned when a 3rd party driver can cause it's failure in normal mode, but so can many other things cause this failure.
Secondly, it still can be a bit buggy. We thoroughly tested SysRestore on my other Tech site and wrote a number of papers on it under XP (XP, SP1, SP2). We found that it failed in over 43% of the time and in 11% it caused the system to need reinstallation afterwards...not good numbers IMHO.

I have tried SysRestore in Vista myself and it failed 4 times and worked once. This was during Beta testing Comodo Firewall.
One thing you can check is the CBS Logs, Windows\Logs\CBS.log or CBS.persist.log for more info on the failures. You have to know exactly the time you tried the restore and make sure you check the log's last "modified" date to get the right one. They are Large and may not open in Notepad, or will look like it's frozen but it just takes some time to load.
They are big and you'll need to get the date/time right, or check immediately after you have a failed restore and then go to the bottom and work up till you get to the start of the restore, and then look for Failure messages. These logs log all system processes and may be daunting but be persistent because good info is in there on these failures.

But again, I just have to say that if you're depending on System Restore to the point that it seems you guys are, then there is actually a different problem we should be looking at, and that's your habits on a computer that causes the corruptions needing a restore. Or, is it simply a case of you using restore to fix little things that it shouldn't be used for? This is another common mistake by newer users they simply don't know any better or how to research and fix little things and end up using SysRestore more than it should be.
One more thing...NEVER restore to a point older than 1 week old. Too many other system changes have taken place in that time and that also makes SysRestore buggy and prone to failure, sometimes catastrophically so (see 11% above)...
