Well here is the situation, i had just finished browing forums and chatting with friends online, so i decided to go to sleep, after waking up i tried to start my pc only to see Vista start loading up followed by a black screen, after asking what happened i was told that my 14 year old brother was messing around with my pc and just going to sites that i told him not to, apparently he may have snatched a virus from one of these sites, ive tried a few of the guides on here and the only thing i see left is to wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall everything but even my recovery disc wont wont work, when i go to repair your computer the list thats supposed to show up doesnt even show, it says windows is loading files, then it goes to the loading screen and goes black again then i get a message stating that a hardware or software change may be causing the problem, im at my end here and im about to beat my brothers ass, someone please help me, how can i reformat my pc, its a gateway GT5404

Re: Can someone please answer my thread?

1. What does "messed up" mean exactly ? Hardware issue ? Vista Issue?

2. What is the PC doing that causes you to believe that you need to reformat your hardrive ?

3. Do you have an anti virus protection on the PC ?

4. Can you boot up in Safe Mode ?

5. Where did your brother go that has caused these problems ?

Provide more descriptive analysis as to what your pc is doing...?

Re: Can someone please answer my thread?

You either have a bad disk.

The wrong disk.

A peice of your hardware has gone bad, probably your harddrive.

Or installing windows is more then you can handle.

Take the system in for repair to someone who does know what they are doing.

Re: Can someone please answer my thread?

Well it starts to boot up and then the screen goes black and stays there, wont go to the desktop at all, no matter what i try everything just gets bypassed, recovery disc wont even work it says windows is loading files, then the same vista loading screen comes again, then the black screen after.

Re: Can someone please answer my thread?

Can you be more specific about what your brother did to mess up your pc? Did he mess with the bios, delete system files or open up the case to install more memory and puked on your motherboard?

When you start to boot the computer press f8.
Select safe mode.
Go to your device manager under control panel.
Look in your video driver settings and report back what video card it says.
If your computer blacks out in safe mode I would check the cables.

Ok it seems i can use my windows xp disc to fix this issue but after setting up the files and preparing to install i get this stop error.

Stop: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF76440BF, 0XF7A90208, 0XF7A8FF08

PCI.SYS - Address F76440BF, Base at F763D000, Datestamp 3B7D855C

Anyone knows what this means and how to get around it? any help would be appreciated :)

Well it is clear to me you don't know what you are doing and now complicating things. You have failed to clearly articulate what exactly your little brother did, failed to report back on our suggestions and now further complicate things by introducing XP.

Unless you start participating and following some of the expertise provided from the willing participants on this forum it is wasting time trying guess how to fix your problem.

My Computer

my brother went on some fake yahoo messenger site called Meebo and ive heard that this site has viruses and trojan horses, he was there talking with someone and accepted a file from them, he told me after accepting the file the computer shut down on its own and would not boot to the desktop, far as getting into safe mode, it doesnt work, i get to the options after holding F8 and when i select safe mode, same thing it goes to the screen with the little green bar that moves across with windows corporation under it and then goes black and stays there.

My Computer

007 you seem to want to understand what your doing and I praise you for your efforts.

But...

If the system were on my bench since you reported this problem it would already be up, running and home by now.

Stop wasteing your time.

Techs have ways of fixing your system that are to involved to get into here. and since your system would be down and offline for most of it, following detailed instructions would be diffacult.

Take your system with your Vista disk and product key to a repair shop.

What kind of computer is this ?

Do you have an OEM recovery disk ?

Can you boot up and tell the computer to boot to that DVD drive with your recovery disk in.

See the problem is....if you little brother "accepted a file" and it's a rootkit your computer is toast. A rootkit is a motherload virus finds it's way into the bootsector of a drive and can install itself in the firmware....

What kind of "recovery" disk do you have ?

My Computer

It came with the Gateway GT5404, but i guess ill do what everyone is suggesting and just take it to a shop lol, but thanks for taking time to listen guys :) but since my warranty is up ill need to get a new one and just let gateway fix it

My Computer

We would love nothing more then to get you running again 007.

You got stuff going on that will require on the fly calls to be made while fixing it. And that make it very difficult to give you advice that "will" help you.

Good luck.
