Solved System restore (SP1)

Does anybody have the same problem and / or could help. Since window update installed SP1, system restore does not work anymore. While trying to create a restore point a message pops up : the restore point could not be created for the following reason : insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data (0x800423F). HDD has 60go free. Could it be the readyboost SD card of 8go - of which 4go are for readyboost ?

thank in advance, any help most appreciated

Thanks, unfortunately it did not work. I can resize it whatever size i want and it does resize it. I can switch it off with no impact on the size allocated and activate it back. But the message remains the same.

System Restore "restore points" are missing or deleted

"A restore point reaches an age of 90 days. The restore point is then deleted because 90 days is the default time to live.'

Hello again,
I know this may be a stupid question ... :o This is how you're trying this?

Thanks, there is no stupid question, especially while you kindly trying to help. The answer is yes, absolutely, step by step. If had found this thread before and tried it. I've also looked into the services which one are on / off, since i though that could be the explanation. But to no avail. You're very much welcome with any idea, (except reformat / reinstall vista....)

I forgot to add, i removed the readyboost sd card which i tought could be the reason, but no changes

I'm using a laptop which - looking at the hdd properties in computer manage - has an eisa partition of 700mb and the actual c: of 93go I wonder if this is what would prevent me from using the system restore which give such error messages
Failed to create restore point on volume (Process = C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs; Descripton = Windows Update; Hr = 0x8004231f).

Any help is most welcome

Hi,

Might be Vista hasn't got the space on the eisa partition to store a shadow copy of it. Does this show as a separate partition , e.g. volume D or similar ?
If so, Open system restore, click create restore point or change settings and uncheck drive D.

If it's not showing as a separate volume then right click computer > manage > disk management and if it is there , right click the volume, give it a drive letter,e.g. D then restart. Then uncheck it from system restore as above.

Hope this helps

I've attached a word file to describe the issue. I can't make any backup or restore or create a restore point. Any search for a result has been to no avail so far. Kind regards

Hello calabrache.

View attachment SYSTEMRESTORE.doc

From what I see in that doc. is that you are trying to create a restore point for the wrong drive.

From my understanding: to create a restore point for C: (windows drive) you have
to create it on C: the active windows drive.
From the snip I took from your doc. you are attempting to create it on the wrong drive.
Try to create a point on the C: "System" and let me know!

Hi,

What is that drive identified as SW_Preload(C) (Missing), is that the 700mb eisa volume ?

If it is, you won't be able to create a restore point of this so untick it (there isn't enough room on it to fit a shadow copy of itself).

Try ticking only SW_Preload (C) (System) and create a restore point - if it works, then create another but this time also tick Local Disk (D).

Hope this helps

( Sorry , in my previous post I thought you only had a C drive and the eisa partition was unnamed - didn't know you also had another drive already named D.)

@SIW2, D: is probably the "Factory Recovery" partition and if so there
will not be enough room on that to create a point on either!

Yes Kid, it could well be the recovery partition - but as long as he gets a shadow copy of C then fails when trying C and D together, he will know only to tick box C for future restore pts.

Calabrache - have a look and see if you have a folder named WAU anywhere ( could be inside the recovery partition ). If you have, post back and I'll show you how to make a full installation dvd from these.

I have just seen you have Vista ultimate - did this come pre-installed and presumably you have the install disc anyway?

I did realise the document wasn't very clear - i've updated with the pdf attached. The T61p has on EISA partition of 700Mb, which i can not access with anything, the a C: partition (called sw_preload) of 93MB of which about 45 are used. Then i use an external usb drive to do backup (f: or D:). I have reviewed the file (pdf) hopfully that shall be clearer. Strange enough lenove Rescue and Recovery is working fine, but not way to use MS B&C center, and especially the system restore feature.

Any help most welcome
Regards

( Sorry , in my previous post I thought you only had a C drive and the eisa partition was unnamed - didn't know you also had another drive already named D.)

Compaq Diagnostic Utilities Partition. It is where you can run simple and extended diagnostics on your Hardware straight off the HD.

Besides, if something is 700 MB in size, that should be your first clue - why in the world would you try to create a restore point on something that tiny? 700 MB is roughly 1 CD - and since SR uses about 12% of the space of any drive by default, you're looking at a whopping 84 MB.

From the Windows Help link on this pic:

System Restore settings.PNG

We get the following:

How much disk space does System Restore require?

To store restore points, you need at least 300 megabytes (MB) of free space on each hard disk that has System Protection turned on. System Restore might use up to 15 percent of the space on each disk. As the amount of space fills up with restore points, System Restore will delete older restore points to make room for new ones.
System Restore will not run on disks smaller than 1 gigabyte (GB).
