Why has my Vista become so slow?

Hi,

My Vista x64 Ultimate was fast at first, but now after around 6months it has been slower. I have cleaned all Vista components and uninstalled unnecessary softwares/games. My HDD has 70% space remaining and its defragged. I have fast AVG antivirus and when I try to open a new folder, let's say my documents folder, it opens it fast but its all blank white and it keeps loading for like 3-5 seconds and then the contents show up. What's wrong? I expect an immediately folder content showing up especially when I have 3.55 GHz quad core and 8800 GTX T_T

I'm having exactly the same problems,

I dont think its what we have on or wrong with our systems Ithink that it must be 1 of the recent Windows updates

(I'm running Vista x64 Home Premium)

I'm getting annoyed because nowadays if I open Games -window it opens instantly but nothing shows up for like 5-10secs ! It's very frustrating...

Games work well on my PC though... Crysis @ High 2x AA = 30fps.. My PC isnt slow...

I think we will just have to put up with it and wait for a new update that fixes this problem (that shouldn't have been there in the first place >: ( )

Check out the networking options. Have you got shared folders. Have you mapped a drive? All of these reasons can slow down a pc.

I have 4Gb of ram, and 200GB hard drive in RAID 0, and mine does that too. Windows defrag doesnt see or defrag files larger than 64mb, So your issue may in fact be fragmentation.

Try a full defrag and then restart computer. You should see a vast speed improvement. I perfom a full defrag every week or so. Also, with Vista I would run no less than 2GB ram.
Start>All Programs>Accessories>right click Command Prompt, click run as administrator> in command prompt window copy and paste, or type the following: (replace c: with drive you want to defrag if other than c)

defrag c: -w

note- the above command is to defrag the c drive, all files regardless of size

I have read alot of debate on Vista's built in defragger. I think it is a little uninspired. I use Perfectdisk to defrag my drive.

Hi Kaisellgren,

You might go through these to see how much it can help speed Vista backup for you.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
Funny thing is there's nothing more to do :P

- All Vista features removed (I'm talking about those Windows Features).
- All unnecessary services stopped.
- Defragmented drivers and optimized the SATA speed.
- I have a 1/3 space used fast SATA II hdd.
- I have 4 GB of DDR 2 833MHz 3-3-3-8
- I have a 3 GHz quad core
- I have 8800 GTX OC'ed
- Latest drivers on everything (including BIOS, I had to flash my BIOS to latest to make my backlighted Microsoft Reclusa keyboard to function in ASUS P5N32 SLI)
- Yes indexing is stopped (the service and all options I could ever find)
- All unnecessary programs removed, even MS Paint, Internet Explorer, Calculator, ... etc
- No automatic defragmentation, updating, nothing on background. Only 28 processes running.
- Registry is cleaned with TuneUp and Registry Mechanic and defragged too.
- I hoovered my PC inside, no dust.
- No hibernation / sleep mode and I also removed system restore (those features all used over 38 GB of space omfg <_<)
- No sidebar
- Only AV & FW at startup, AV = AVG, FW = COMODO Personal Firewlal (automatic updates disabled for both, realtime scanning too)
- Power options set to high 100%
- I'm forcing DLLs to unload
etc
etc
etc

everything I could ever find or think of has been done. My Vista was also edited using vLite so it's even more faster than prebuild Vista versions, because instead of disabling some features, I simply do not have them :) (like unnecessary services, windows features,...)

My PC works blazingly fast, all Aero effects and DreamScene works really quickly. I have no problems, except that some random folder contents dont show up.

Btw, I tested my pictures folder. I have 7811 PNG images in one folder, I opened the folder and it took around 1 second to open it. I see no lag when I scroll the list. But when I press the Games window to open, I have to wait at least 3 seconds, mostly 5 seconds. Sometimes my Documents opens slowly too.

No idea =/, I guess I have to satisfy then.

That's strange....

Maybe you stopped a service that's causing a conflict or delay as vista is looking for a .dll / reg file or something. Have you checked your error logs?
