    Vista 64x and CPU's

    Hi

is there a list of CPU's that can run a 64-bit version of Vista?
if there isn't any, can you say if my CPU can run a 64-bit Vista?

    I got a Intel Celeron M 540 1.86GHz.... (printscreen of CPU-Z is attached)

I've read alot about this but still I can't get any smarter...
One site says it can't and an other says it can

    Hi storsett,

Any 64-bit processor should be capable of running a 64-bit version of Vista. It really depends on the motherboard and whether there are any 64-bit drivers for that. To answer your question about your CPU, have a look at the following line taken from your image:

Note the 'EM64T'. This indicates that your CPU has 64-bit support. For an explanation of this term, see the following website.

Like the other said, your CPU is 64bit capable so it can run Vista x64. But you must make sure your motherboard manufacturer provides all motherboard drivers for Vista x64 (chipset, audio, network...) and you have drivers for all your other hardware you may have ( printer, scanner, webcam...). You must check on each manufacturer's site for them. I would not try to install Vista (x64 or 32 bit) on an old system (older than 1-2 years). You can not use any 32 bit driver on an 64 bit system (but you can run 32 bit applications).Remember, also for an "entry level" or old system Vista will run slower than XP because it needs more resources, in general.

    Oh, thanks

I know there are 64-bit drivers for all the stuff on the PC
so now all there is in my way is the shipping cost

    only one more question!
I have Vista home basic (32-bit)
    can I buy a 64-bit Home premium ?
or do I have to buy Premium 32-bit first then upgrade to 64-bit?

no... you can buy x64 straight away....

you need to do a fresh install anyway when going from x32 to x64.

(only install x64 if hardware is new)....your rig may get bogged down

You can also order the media from Microsoft themselves. Follow the instructions below. This comes from my Vista package.
