I am new to this board so I hope this is the correct forum to make a request.

I love the personal shell folders so much I would like to create extra folders, any guidance on how would be most appreciated .

Hello Topbrass1960, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You can create a New Folder with the name you want in the C:\Users\(User Name) location like you would anywhere else. It will show up in all of the same locations as your other user folders.

You can also change the New Folder icon to have it match the others with the green folder icon. This tutorial will show you how to. Browse to the C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll location (step 3B) to select an icon like the others that you want.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Edit: ignore the rest of the message. I just found an entry in said registry key called "!Do not use this registry key". Value: "Use the SHGetFolderPath or SHGetKnownFolderPath function instead". But, if you still want to try it (backup the registry first!)...

Edit again: I just looked up those two functions. It seems this message was aimed at programmers using the registry to get the location of the shell folders. Those two functions do that, which is safer, I guess, than writing a program that noses around in your registry. Even so, continue at your own risk :)
---------------------------------------------

I've found in the registry, this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

It contains a list of all your shell folders (Music, Documents, etc) and their respective locations.

I haven't tried it, and don't know whether it will work, but try creating a new folder called "Test" (or whatever :)). Then add a new REG_SZ into this registry key called "Test" and set the value to the path of the folder.

Next, type "shell:Test" into the Start Menu search bar thingy - with a bit of luck, it will open the Test folder. But, most likely, this won't work :).

Hi CreepinJesus,

Sorry, but I have already tried this and it will not work. :(

Nice try though, :geek:

At least it was not an easy solution I missed. If at anytime either of you figure out a way to do it please let me know. To bad MS does not provide the option

Hi Suezorm,

Shell folders are special folders that Windows uses to indicate the default location for many types of settings and data. In this case, the shell folders are the C:\Users\(user name) folders.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
