Acer tech support said do a factory restore :p and the Vista Forum tutorial instructions didn't fix it.

BTW, I have Vista Home Premium X32, if that makes any difference.

I did install the "Vista Start Menu" freeware and it works, but I want the
original Vista Start button back, I got used to it.

Thanks for your help.

Hi hedaman,

Have you tried using that program to reset it or uninstall it

Correct icon, I am confused.

Use Vista Start Menu program to "reset or uninstall" what exactly?

If you installed a program that changed the Start-Menu and want the old one back have you tried using that program to change it or have you tried uninstalling that program to reset it?

Or are you talking about the classic menu?

My Computer

I have not used the Classic menu with this notebook.

The Vista Start Menu program's only function, as far as I can tell, is to display the Start menu which the Vista Start button is unable to do.

If I uninstall the program, won't that bring me back to where I was, with no Start button?

Why exactly do you need a program to make Vista have another start button? Vista does come with a start-button already and it will still be there when you uninstall that program :sarc:

My Computer

Sarcasm uncalled for. Of course Vista comes with a start button.

But that's the whole point. IT DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE, so if I uninstall
the new program, then I am left without a start button.

Maybe I am being petty, but I want my Vista back just like it was from the
factory, no classic menus, and no bare-bones freeware programs that keep
asking you to buy the Pro version.

Sorry its 3am here I was just stating the obvious and didn't realize you where meaning the original start button wasn't working :o

How long ago did you start having this issue?

My Computer

Have you tried a system restore back to the point when it did work?

problem started a week and a half ago, no apparent cause. I can't use System Restore because there are no restore points even though the "automatic restore point" feature is enabled.

If I would have had restore points, it would have been an easy fix.

They should be there unless you disabled either Volume Shadow Copy service or the System Restore service, you also might be deleting the resotre points with a system utility program or something like ccleaner?

Does system restore say there are no restore points or couldnt you find a date listed?

You might find the tutorial useful, vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html

Does the Start menu still come up if you press the Windows key on your keyboard, or by pressing Ctrl+Esc ?

Since you were told by Acer to perform a factory reset, perform it again - I doubt you have installed that much in a week.

If the start menu does not show again, contact Acer and ask them why their factory reset image is corrupted and what to do about it.
