Solved Reinstalling Aero?

Alright, I'm not necessarily the most computer savvy person so I let one of my friends who is genius with this stuff work his magic on my computer every once in awhile.

Well, one of the first things he did to my laptop when I got it, was get rid Aero. At first I didn't mind, but now I want it back. And I mean its gone. When I go into "Window Color and Appearance" it doesn't even have the Aero option listed anymore.

Help, please?

My Computer

Sorry but Aero is not available on Vista basic :(

Not only does basic not have Aero Glass, but it is the worst O/S you could possible have installed. It has less features than XP Home does.
Basic (i.e., cut rate version of Vista) was created for systems that cannot support Vista, primarily so that Intel could off load some chips that could not meet "Vista capable" requirements.

Microsoft e-mails reveal Intel pressure over Vista

As far back as 2005, Microsoft executives knew that confusing hardware requirements for the Windows Vista Capable program might get them in trouble. But they did it anyway--over the objection of PC makers--at the behest of Intel, according to e-mails released as part of a class-action lawsuit pending against Microsoft.
In early 2006, Intel's Renee James, vice president and general manager of Intel's software and solutions group, was able to prevail on Microsoft's Will Poole to change the proposed requirements for Microsoft's proposed "Vista Ready" marketing program to include an older integrated graphics chipset that couldn't run Vista's Aero interface. At the time, Intel was worried that it wouldn't be able to ship the more advanced 945 chispet, which was capable of running Aero, in step with Microsoft's proposed schedule for the introduction of the marketing upgrade plan.
This led to the creation of the "Vista Capable" logo, which is the reason Microsoft is now in court, facing a class-action lawsuit on the part of PC owners who bought so-called Vista Capable machines in late 2006 only to find those machines could only run Vista Basic, which doesn't feature the Aero interface. The potential for confusion was well-understood both outside the company, as noted here in this CNET News.com story from March 2006, and within the company, as multiple e-mail threads reveal.

Hmmm... well I know for a fact that I had Aero.
So maybe I have a different version of Vista than what I thought I had.

Ok, I just checked and I have Vista Home Premium. My bad. ^^;

My Computer

here's a thought... Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Change Color Scheme > Windows Aero > Apply
try it ... if you don't like it ... go back to Vista Basic good luck bjm_

I have Vista Ultimate and I can verify for everyone that if the service called "Themes" is not started than the Windows Vista Theme will not appear on the list to choose from. I have also duplicated this scenario on Vista Business too. I am guessing the same scenario apples to all versions of Vista except for Home Basic?

Just to explain a little further to what Raj has said.

In your windows start/search box, type services.msc and press enter.

OK the UAC prompt and you should now see a box like the picture below, scroll down to themes and check if it is started.

Yeah, what I'm saying is its not in my theme selections anymore.
My friend said Aero was a waste of my computer space and got rid of it completely.

What I need is a way to get it back on my computer.

Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service is needed as well. Without it running all you get are Vista Basic, Standard and Classic (and the high contrast ones) as options, no Aero.

You may want it back - but you also need to read the posts - did you read http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/173584-reinstalling-aero.html#post804533 - the post right above yours - and verify if that service is running or not?

If it is not running, you can't get Aero. If it says stopped / disabled, you'll need to start / enable it.

Yes I did read it, just as I have read every other post in this thread thus far.
I followed through exactly what I was told in that post, and themes was already running. It has always been running.

I keep trying to say that Aero is not on my computer. Its not that I can't find it, its just not there. My friend removed it completely. This isn't me thinking he got rid of it; he audibly stated that he was removing Aero from my computer as he did it.

Now, months later I've decided I want it back, and I just want to know if there is a way of doing so.

My Computer

I'd call him up and find out how he removed it.

Yes yes indeed ... I don't know where Raj's posting just went, but it fixed the problem for me. He said to type in "sevices.msc" in the start search and in the window that rumbles up, go down to Themes. I click on that puppy and hit the start. My!!! There it was!!! Aero came back to life. Then after rebooting my laptop, lo & behold, Aero was not there anymore. I nearly hurled myself out through the basement window in grief!!! I did the same procedure and this time I hit the properties and in this little window that popped up, I noticed the Startup Type was manual. I chanced it and switched it to Automatic. And yes, to my great surprise, upon rebooting the machine, the Aero stayed and remains normal.
With this accomplished, I shall nuke my Tea and toast Raj. Appreciate the help.

(should any not see this posting, could you please inform me immediately)

johngalt, you can so report it if you see this posting. But remember, to type slowly in all responses so one can understand all the instructions!!??! :-}

Actually who I should be toasting is z3r010BOFH ... (I think that's the correct username). It was really his explanation of what Raj stated that gave me the clue as to overcoming my snag. I knew there was two pages on this topic, but something after the fact that I read gave me the impression it was Raj that mentioned the "services.msc" ... consequently I was looking for that phrase in his posting and I didn't see it. I thought it must have got torpedoed off the forum. I am happy he got the ball rolling though.
I had hit how many forums trying to overcome this and nothing was working. I even called Staples and the fellow there advised me to reinstall Vista. His reason was because Aero didn't load the first time because there was only one Gig of RAM. I knew he had flipped off the rails so I started back on the forums again and z3r010 BOFH did the trick. Again, these postings are much appreciated as is the whole of the forum!!!

Hi ripsnort,
Great to hear you got it resolved! Glad I can help. About 6 months ago, on my own PC, I disabled Themes and noticed immediately Windows Aero was gone so that's what I thought about after reading this post. :) The admins in this site are da bomb yes indeed!

z3r010 thanks for supplying the detailed info. I was at work and short on time.
