Installing Vista

Hi, I was thinking about getting Vista Home Premium. I have Xp Home. Here are my system specs:

Mobo: MSI 661FM3-L (MS-7082)

Ram: 1536 gigs

Video Card: AtI Radeon 9550, 256 MBs Of ram

That good enough for vista? I ran the upgrade advisor and it said i was fine, but i wanted to make sure. Thank You.

Re: Installing Vista

You will be able to run Vista, but it won't be at top performance. You should get at least 2gb of memory for vista, but its doable with less. You should be fine, but you will get at least a few of those aggravating moments when you run out of RAM and your system practically locks up. I have 4GB of RAM and I've seen it a few times.

A few recommended system hardwares:
* 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
* 1.5-4 GB of system memory
* A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero (DirectX 9 class graphics processor that supports WDDM Driver, Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware and 32 bits per pixel with big enough graphics memory)
* 128 MB of graphics memory
* 80 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space
* DVD-ROM Drive
* Audio output capability
* Internet access capability

Re: Installing Vista

Hello twilightluke, welcome to Vista forums!

It would be better if all the RAM matched!

Re: Installing Vista

I would use 4gig of ram. It depends what you are going to use it for. Casual PC use, Gameing or Artwork/Photo retouching. Giving a system spec and asking if the computer is good enough to work is great, if we actually know what you are going to use it for.

Re: Installing Vista

Correct - Vista wants 3 GB of RAM minimum, to run semi efficiently. With 4 GB of RAM, to make use of all 4 GB, you'll want a 64bit version of Vista.

However, Roy, the main problem here is that this board only supports 2 GB max - 1stChoiceMemory.com - MSI 661FM3-L Motherboard RAM Memory Upgrades

Furthermore, it supports a small variety of CPUs, as seen here - CPU-Upgrade: MSI 661FM3-L (MS-7082) cpu support and features

Finally, the board is so old it simply may not work - you'll want the absolute latest BIOS made for the board but even that may not be enough.

Twilightluke, by the time all is said and done, you'll put more money into upgrading than you can getting a decent quad core machine with 4 GB of DDR2 RAM and a decent sized HD for about $600 USD:

Newegg.com - $500 - $750, Core 2 Quad, Desktop PCs, Desktop PCs, PCs & Laptops

Intel Core 2 Quad Computer, Intel Core 2 Quad Desktop TigerDirect.com
