Missing pagefile.sys file

Hoping someone can help out. Been having an issue where programs will randomly stop responding.

First stop: Pagefile.sys. However, while the OS is on C:, can't locate a c:\pagefile.sys.

Some background:
1. Yes, hidden files are set to show in Folder Options.
2. Did a search for the file (including non-indexed locations) and can't find it.
3. Automatically manage paging file size for all drives is selected. C:[OS], System managed is displayed.

Is it possible that I don't have a pagefile.sys? Could that be why my system is hanging periodically?

Thanks!

Hello Stocktiki, and welcome to Vista Forums.

C:\pagefile.sys is a hidden Protected Operating System file and not just a hidden system file. You will need to make sure that you have that to unhide as well. See the Tip box at the top of this tutorial for more details about this. You should have one there by default.

Your hanging could be caused by a number of things. Did you receive any specific error messages, or does this happen after any specifc thing that you do?

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Wow! Thanks for the rapid reply. Your tutorial was great and now I can see pagefile.sys. It is 3.3 GB -- on a Vista Home Premium PC with 4 GB of installed RAM.

Generally the freezing occurs when closing various applications. Usually occurs when closing IE7, Windows Movie Maker and Microsoft Money. Added 2 GB of RAM this week (only 3.1 of it is addressable) -- and the freezes have become less frequent but still happen pretty randomly.

Not sure if the fact the PC is used as somewhat of a home server matters. It streams music, photos and video to an Xbox 360. Noticed in Reliability and Performance monitor there is quite a bit of hard drive reading of various photo and video files.

Interestingly, applications will often report "not working" prematurely. The applications will usually close themselves naturally -- it just might take 6 seconds instead of the 2-3 seconds Vista seemingly expects.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

If everything was running fine until you added the new RAM, then you might check to see if you have the latest BIOS installed for your motherboard to see if that can help.

Is the RAM that you just added the same type as the one you had before, or is it different. Mixxing RAM type can usually cause problems. If you have 1 GB sticks, then you might remove 1 to see how it runs with just 3 GB of RAM. You might also check to see if you may have a bad RAM stick by running the computer with only 1 stick at a time to see if only one of them causes this problem.

You might also look at your logs in Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor to see if anything stands out.

Hi. The freezing problem actually started happened before I installed the additional 2GB of RAM. My system was running on just 2GB of RAM -- and the memory usage % was pretty high (usually around 65% or so). I hoped the additional RAM might help fix the problem.

Since adding the new RAM, things are running better and the random "not responding" errors are less frequent. They still occur, though.

I'll start looking through event monitor for some clues.
