Solved System Performance

Hello,
Over the last few days I have been trying to improve my PC performance.
That is, when I am out on the web, the system is not as fast as I think it should be.
Here's a few data points - any help or ideas are welcomed:
1. I use Virus and ad blocker software and run it weekly - I have not found anything that suggests I have a problem.
2. I am using Vista SR 1 , Home Edition
3. I use Verizon networking - its 20 down and 5 up or 20/5. They say on their side , its performing to that speed.
On my side I am getting ~ 5 down and ~ 1 to 2 up , transfers.

4. I tried "Speedup my PC" application and got maybe a 3% to 5% max improvement
5. I do not have a ton of apps running in memory... pretty std. stuff
6. I tried Firefox as a browser, and the speed improved slightly , yet not all the plug ins worked as I wished and I am back to IE. { tried Google Chrome and made no difference}

Any one have some ideas for perf. improvment?

thanks

Hello Brink,
thanks for the post and the ideas... Yes, most of these ideas that were offered are part of my improving system performance e.g. bloatware removed, 3 GB of Memory, updated bios, stuff like that, I also ran the registry compression app you recommended.

I think thre number 1 thing I found was two anti-virus packages running concurrently e.g. MS Defender and AVG anti-virus . I turned off Defender. I have found AVG to meet the needs. ( If you recommend another approach I am all ears).

I also de-insalled Speedup my PC . This app stepped on some of my book marks, some simple apps did not run correctly with this utility.
I informed the Company that makes this app, and here is the Cust. Service reps response ( thought you and your readers my enjoy this - my highlights added)

"'Please note that Erasing sensitive information is one of the features of SpeedUpMyPC. It is very useful if someone else gets hold of your computer"

now there's a sales man!

thanks and I am open to any other tweaking that improves network ( Browser) performance... my machine runs great as a stand lone unit i.e. not needing to 'fetch' info from the web, but that is where 70% of my time goes.

thank you again - this site has been a valuable resource for me.

Your welcome Frank.

LOL, that is a sales man.
