Hello,

I am getting the following error when try to invoke System Restore in Windows Vista Home Premium, Dell Inspiron 1525 Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz Processor.

"The maximum number of secrets that may be stored in a single system has been exceeded. (0x80070565). Please try again."

Searching on net, I found different views but no concrete solution. If any one has come across this problem please let me know.

Thanks.

Is it a virus ?? I am using KIS2009 and unable to find any virus using Full deep scan. Laptop has no problem and is working as normal.

Following steps has worked for few getting error while System Restore.

1) Start the computer and press f8 on boot up and select 'Safe Mode without networking'.
2) In the start menu type 'cmd' (without quotes) and on the top search result right click the program and choose 'run as administrator'
3) Type "net stop winmgmt" without quotes and press enter to make certain the WindowsManagementInstrumentation (WMI) service is not running.
4) In the start menu click 'computer' on the right hand side. Go to the windows\system32\WBEM\ folder and rename the Repository folder to something else like OLDRepository (right click and choose 'Rename Folder'.
5) Reboot and restart as normal.
6) In the start menu type 'cmd' (without quotes) and at the top right click the program and choose 'run as administrator'
7) Type 'net stop winmgmt' (without quotes) and press enter to stop the wmi service.
8) Type 'winmgmt /resetRepository' (without quotes) and restart the system.

My problem got resolved. After trying for 15 days and searching for hours and hours on the net I did not find any solution until today when I just went to download.com site for downloading utility software. I came across Malwarebytes Anti Malware. I installed it and ran a quick scan. It identified following and delete them successfully.

Registry Keys Infected: 3
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\msliksur (Trojan.DNSChanger)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msliksurserv (Rootkit.Agent)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\RichVideoCodec (Trojan.FakeAlert)

Files Infected: 1
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\msliksurserv.sys (Rootkit.Agent)

I restarted my PC and System Restore started working. Thanks a lot to Malwarebytes Anti Malware. Its excellent Anti Malware. I tried running many anti virus, spywares, adwares but nothing worked.

Weird! And I thought Windows Defender was supposed to be AntiMalware...

BTW, do u have Windows Defender turned on? Its pretty basic but it should be able to keep you safe.

Thanks for the tip PCFreak, that 'too many secrets' thing was really bugging me. Downloaded MalwearBytes, ran it, restarted, and poof, no more 'secrets'! Same malware as noted above.

Again, many, many thanks.
