vista ultimate problem

hi all, i am new and not very good with vista but i have been facing some vista problems, first of all, i dont know why, when one of my program goes into lock down, i could not get it to shut down. i tried everything like task manager and log off, it would then just lock down the whole pc. here is my pc spec
i have a thinkpad t400
intel core 2 duo t9600 2.80GHz, 4gb of memory, and 2 gb of turbo memory with a 320 5400rpm hdd. this is the os that came with the laptop so if someone can help me, that will be great.

also it takes my laptop about 1 minute to going hibernate. is that normal? it looks like it has completely shut down. so i am confused.
thanks for all your help.

Re: vista ultimate problem

Hello t3a, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Did you press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, then logged off to stop the program from running?

That is about a normal time for hibernation. It takes the computer a moment to save everything to the hibernation file on the hard drive (to restore later) before entering hibernation. You may also notice a slight delay before your computer resumes from hibernation to.

It will look like it shutdown while in hibernation, but it should wake up if you move or click the mouse, or press a key on the keyboard.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: vista ultimate problem

thanks for reply, yes i tried ctrl alt delete, it showed me the screen to either switch user, task manager, log off, and shut down, i tried opening task manager, but it wouldnt do anything but return to the blank program, and basic screen. also i tried log off, it did nothing, tried shut down, it did nothing, but i cant still move my mouse and stuff. because this is a new laptop, i want to know if there is anyway that its a hardware problem..... thanks.

Re: vista ultimate problem

From your description, it sounds like it is just a misbehaving program locking up. If this is caused by just the one program, then you might see if using Compatibility Mode with it can help it run properly.

Re: vista ultimate problem

I do not think there is much you could have done for the first issue other than try and keep the laptop more stable while in use.

For the second issue, I would always recommend that you close anything open and running before closing the lid or shutting it down to help prevent this. Plus, there is a good chance that you could lose data from whatever you had open at the time when you just shut the lid with it still open and running if you were to lose power (ex: battery dies).

Hope this helps,
Shawn
