is there any thing good about vista?

Every thing I have tried to do with my first computer is so hard, nothing works easily and most things don't work at all or if they do it involves hours of tedious research online to find non vista programs to do it. Is there any redeming feature to this operating system for a firstime user who has not done programing, since card punch machines where still in use?

What's your point here? Your Vista doesn't work properly, or too slow? Or what's the problem? (sorry for me not getting it..:p) Post your system specs also, please..

Hi cliff, Welcome to the forums,

Your hours of tedious on-line research has brought you to the correct place to learn how to get the most out of Vista. Spend some time to look through the tutorials and if you have specific problems the good people here will I'm sure try to help.

If you have been out of computing for a long period then I'm afraid that getting to grips with any new operating system will be a difficult process. If you persevere with vista I'm sure you will find a few things to like, :D

As was previously stated..getting to know any operation system for any first time user is going to be hard. Heck, for a first timer XP wasn't exactly a cakewalk either. User inexperience can cause almost as much trouble as malfunctioning equipment/OS problems too. If it's really been that long since you've used a pc ("card punch machines" :-) then a free computer class somewhere wouldn't hurt either.

While Vista certainly isn't bug free and it takes some occasional troubleshooting when things go south but when everything is running as it should then Vista becomes an absolute joy to use. Personally i prefer it over XP.

Yeah please explain what you are trying to do with your computer?

Are you trying to do word processing, internet, Photo editing?

All these should be easy to use, but if this is your first computer no matter what OS you use it will take some time to understand how a computer works.

Anything you do should not take hours of research so please post your problems so we can help.

Computers should be fun to use and once you get a handle on Vista you will find how good it really is!

The biggest mistake with Vista that I see is it's being loaded on PCs that barely meet they system requirements. Then the user/owner attempts to put a load on the PC by doing something whether it's gaming or encoding mp3s etc... And then the inevitable happens, the PC drags/crashes or just locks up. And then by no fault of their own, consumers blame the OS. This has been something thats been done since the release of Windows95 days. It's not the consumers fault and its not necessarily Vista's fault either.

What you have is manufacturers such as Compaq/Dell/E-Machines/HP and any other brand who are trying to make affordable computers for everyone and load them with an OS that is current and supported by MS fully. That would be Vista, as even thought MS is still supporting XP on certain levels, they are not going to be fully supporting it much longer.

So you end up with machines that cannot run Vista and a normal load of operations without slowing/dragging/locking up. And you get upset at Vista, its typical and expected, however if you are looking for some true help here, list your computers specs and what the specific problem is and we will be more than happy to try and help you. But be patient as it will take you time to get used to Vista but it will come with time.

Lastly, welcome to the forums and we hope you enjoy your stay and learn something while here. :D

Cliff,

I also come from the punch-card era of computers. Now I've got over 26 years experience with PC's. Since Windows 95, I've never gone to a new MS operating system without the first legit update from Microsoft. In this case, the release of SP1 before touching Vista. To reiterate what Elements just posted, I recently purchased a new PC with good specs (Vista Home Premium 64-bit with SP1 installed, 4GB RAM, AMD 5200 processor). I have not had one problem so far, even when installing 32-bit software. Not sluggish in the least, actually quite faster than I expected it to be. Anything new takes time to get used to. It's a bit tedious, but take the time, it's worked for me. I picked up a few magazines to walk me through the new features (and gotchas) of Vista. Right now, after my testing and results, I would recommend Vista 64-bit SP1, provided you have a stong enough PC to handle it.

One further tip: you mentioned 'programming' in your post. Do you plan to actually code programs on the Vista machine? If so, you may indeed run into issues with compatibility. If it was just a figure of speech, you should not have too many problems.

Lastly, I think you've come to the right place here at the Vistax64 Forums. I stumbled across this forum after purchasing my new Vista PC and I signed up as a member immediately. Good moderators, lots of help and tips available, and not much grief given to newbies. Props to whoever set this forum up, nice job!

I agree with the others here, just take your time to find your way around and you'll come to appreciate the OS.
A lot will depend on the specs of the machine you have and what it is you want to do with it, if you're into gaming you want the fastest machine with as much RAM as it can support plus a damn good internet connection to keep up. :D

I have posted what I can find about my computer specs.
My point is not that Vista doen't work but that I am frustrated, with things that I think should be simple and aren't.
I am learning that it seems that if you want to do anything like photo/video/music then you need to get software from some other source other than Vista.
Yes Vista is superior to XP, I would be experiencing simillar problems if I had let myself be talked into putting XP on this machine.
I appologize for venting!
Thanks for the kind offers of support
Cliff

Well, Vista is an operating system. Its basic function is and should be (in my opinion) to make sure your computer works (and it should make sure it does so as fast as possible) and can run programs so you can actually do stuff with your computer.

Though any operating system comes with loads of utilities and programs included, for the more specialist programs (such as video and music editing) you will need third party software.

I am sure that microsoft would love to include it in windows, but for one, it would up the price even more. Second, I don't think the anti-trust watchdogs would like it very much. Third, I think that a company which has specialised in making programs especially for this type of thing knows far better how to produce what the user actually needs than a general software manufacturer (which microsoft has become). MS needs to take into account the wishes of the general people, thereby usually ignoring the nichemarket. With the specialty products, you have the opportunity to select the product which is, for you, the best match to your wishes and desires.

But that's just how I see it.

Hello Cliff, welcome to Vista forums!

The better you get to know Vista the more you'll like it.
One thing though, looking at your system specs you will get a better response from
Vista with more added RAM (memory) as opposed to "Ready Boost" as long as the
motherboard will support it.

Anything you need to know about Vista can be found at the link below.

There are free programs available of the internet. Open office, paint.net and the gimp. There are to many audio programs to mention. If you type the name into google it will give you the links required.

Microsoft has a hard time as it is from companies and anti trust lawsuits, this is why you have to get your own software.

There are some programs with Vista, a simple paint program, text editor and media player.

Just have a look at the free programs and you will be supprised with the quality of what is out there.

Make sure to always do some research on those freeware programs before downloading them, or ask on forums like this whether or not it is trustable.

Welcome to the wonderful world of 21st century computers:D hehe!

No seriously, it's a bit hard at the beginning (Iknow, I taught my grandpa about pc's...:p) but once you get the hang of it it's nothing but fun and knowledge!
