Vista Problems

I bought a new HP laptop last Wednesday. My girlfriend has used it to write a paper for school and that is about it. Its been connected to the internet maybe 4 times. I turned it on at work and noticed it looks like the old Windows, before XP and my trash can is gone. When I go and try to change the Appearance settings it says "Windows host process(Rund1132) has stopped working..." Anyone know what the problem could be? I restored the PC to the first time I started it and it did not change a thing.

Hi Ryan,

Hard to say what went on there - could be some sort of malware , or user action that has corrupted some system files.

You did the right thing by trying a system restore first, but since it hasn't worked, suggest you use the HP recovery program to reinstall the original image and put your laptop back to how it was when it left the factory.

As you only just got it and haven't used it much , you probably won't be inconvenienced by this.

Did you make the recovery disks already ? I believe HP only allow you to do this once - check the manual for details.

You can probably recover either from the built in recovery program - which uses the recovery partition ( quicker ), or from the disks you have made ( these are for if you are unable to use the recovery program - it may get corrupted, or you may be unable to boot in ).

Hope that helps

Hi Ryan, if restoration as suggested by SIW2 will not work, I would take it back for an exchange because it seems more like to be hardware problem. Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

Hello P71Ryan, welcome to Vista forums!

The instructions below are for a "Factory Recovery" if you decide to do it that way.

HP Recovery Center

Be advised that this will take the machine back to the point when you first took it of the box.
The "HP Recovery Center" will give you the option to send to backup anything you
don't want to lose, so have backup media available to use if you choose this option.

With the machine off press the power button, as soon as you do that start tapping the F11 key.
That should take you to the HP Recovery Center. When there just follow the prompts.
It is pretty much self explanatory. From the time you boot into F11 (not counting
any backups you choose to make) you should be back on a working desktop in about
30 minutes. After it restarts just follow the prompts again to finish the process.

If your first option is system restore select no, which should take you to system recovery.
You want to try system recovery not system restore, unless you have good restore points!

Keep us informed!

Backup before you do a factory restore. No data will be left on it.
