dvd-rw not recognized

I have a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182M SB04
and it cant recognize blank DVD-RW, but can read blank CD-RW.
every time i put in the dics it sounds like its struggling to read them then quits
or it recognizes them but i cant burn anything to them.
should i try DVD+RW discs or what?

Welcome LEDFinger.

It really sounds like a bad Optical drive. Even if it did work with XP its not working with Vista. I assume you used the drive to install Vista. But your overall problem is you can burn a CD.

I have seen these symptoms before and have always resulted in replacement.

    My main rig runs Vista Ultimate or Server 2008. Depending on which Acronis image I decide to load.

what do you mean? I have never used XP on my comp. I built it then just put Vista on it about a year ago. now im wanting to burn something onto a DVD but its just not being recognized by my dvd drive. blank cds and other dvds that have programs on them work fine its just blank dvds that im having the problem with.
