Go 64 bit or 32 bit?

Am trying to decide if I should go with 32 bit Vista Ultimate or the 64 bit version. My MB is by MSI, P6N Diamond, and they have drivers for 64 bit. The MB has built in X-fi, I plan on installing an intel Q6600 quad core 2.4 Ghz CPU, 4 gigs of memory, and the only extra card I will have in the system is a Hauppauge HD DVR card which Hauppauge has a beta 64 bit driver for. I use the computer mainly for school & to play online games. I do plan to network it with a vista 32 bit computer if thats something to consider.

Would I be better off using 32 bit or 64 bit version of Vista Ultimate?

Welcome to the forums,

In my humble opinion I'd go for 64-bit, first of all because a 32-bit version will NOT support your 4Gb of RAM, it only goes up to 3Gb max.

Here's a good link,
Compare editions: 64-bit editions of Windows Vista

If you want more info, try a google search, something like compare 32 64 bit or something...

Cheers,

yeah, it's true about the ram, the 32-bit don't support more than around 3GB. But then on the other hand, it is easier to find compatible software to a 32-bit system. ofcourse it's getting easier all the time due to the x64 getting more common.

anyway, in my opinion, go for the 64-bit version

From what I can tell I only have one program that isn't X64 and the company just sent me a link to their beta program for a new x64 version so things seem good.

Will I have any problems networking with my roomates x32 version of Vista or should that work just fine?

Should work fine.

64-bit will not only recognize all of your RAM, it will also give you room to add more RAM in the future if needed (RAM is dirt cheap right now).

As for compatibility issues, I personally always seemed to have more problems out of 32-bit rather than 64-bit. I've now been using x64 for over a year and have found only one application (among the 160+ currently installed) that suffered from any sort of compatibility issue...and that was NiBiTor. Even so, that issue was to be expected given x64's extra kernel-level restrictions.

Also, seeing as how more and more applications are offering native support for x64, it will one day become the standard. True x64 apps have several performance benefits over their x86 counterparts.

For programs that have issues with x64 is there a special method you need to use to install them so that they will work in "x86 emulator for 32-bit Windows"?

Edit:
Well based on several posts I've gone ahead and ordered an additional 4 gigs of memory so my new box will have 8 gig total for Vista 64
