Restore Point question

First, I have Windows Vista 64 Home Premium. The automatic updates popped up, and gave me a required update along with several optional updates. Apparently one of the optional updates made Windows crash. Every time I tried to restart, windows would freeze up while trying to load. I had to completely reinstall Vista on my computer, which moved my old system into a windows.old file, and reinstalled a new version of vista, so now I have 2 versions of vista running, taking up twice the hard drive space. What I want to know is can I do a system restore from one of the restore points in the windows.old file before the bad driver download? I've tried just using the system restore, and it show thats there is no restore points. Is there a way to copy one of the restore points in the windows.old file and paste it into the new restore folder?

I'm sorry, but copying the restore point from the old vista to the new won't work as far as I'm aware.

Did you try running the original installation in safe mode?

Hello g0th, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Sorry, but you will not be able to use a restore point in that manner from the windows.old file. You can copy and user files you may need from that windows.old file to your current installation though if you wanted to keep the current installation and just need you files.

If you really need to restore the old installation, then the Microsoft KB933168 article will show you how to from the windows.old file. From there, you can use a System Restore at boot using a restore point dated before you installed the Windows Update.
