How to customise start menu

Would anyone know how to customise the right hand side of the Vista Start Menu?

I'm happy to install any (safe) freeware or edit the registry (Or any other system files or settings) to do this.

All I want to do is add another folder to the right hand side start menu which links to my alternative documents folder. I do not want to pin it to the start menu.

But, I'd also like to entirely modify it if given the opportunity.

Thanks.

Hello Clintonio, welcome to Vista forums!

Have a go at this; let us know how you do! Be advised: some time Vista doesn't like this!

  1. Click the "Start Orb"
  2. Right-click on "Your Shortcut Icon", then select "Properties"
  3. Click the "Location" tab
  4. Click the "Move..." button
  5. In the "Select a Destination" window, browse into the folder "Your File/Folder". The destination folder should preferably NOT be a drive root folder.
  6. Click "Select Folder"
  7. Click "Apply"
  8. Wait for Windows to move the existing contents (if any) of the previous location. If you get any messages that a file exists in the destination (such as "desktop.ini", etc), you may or may not want to allow the copy to overwrite the existing file.
  9. When the move is complete, click "OK"
The "Your Icon” on the Start Menu will now open to "Your File/Folder".

This technique will also work for the following user profile "folders":
  • Contacts
  • Desktop
  • Documents
  • Downloads
  • Favorites
  • Links
  • Music
  • Pictures
  • Saved Games
  • Searches
  • Videos

I'm sorry, I probably wasn't clear enough.

I want to add a second folder under the Documents one. I have two "Documents" folders, one on a remote machine, one on the local. For that reason I'd like an extra button in that menu.
