Hi folks,

Few days back vista crashed (Dell Inspiron 1525, Vista 32bit Home Premium). It then damaged some DLL files and device drivers. Most of them are now fixed after series of System Restore, SFC /SCANNOW, chkdsk utilities and reinstalling Service packs and other software to fix most of issues. Still some software (mainly windows explorer and office) giving trouble. Here is the CBS log file excerpts:

OK, at this moment Windows Explorer and Office giving "Not Responding" messages. So, I'm using some alternative software for that. Reinstalling of MS Office and Office SP3 didn't work either. MS Word only works when I use "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Winword.exe" /a .

Event Viewer telling me this:

Faulting application Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47918e5d, faulting module MFC80.DLL, version 8.0.50727.762, time stamp 0x457133cf, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0005fbc3, process id 0x1600, application start time 0x01c94d9c55dabfb0.

Faulting application WINWORD.EXE, version 11.0.8227.0, time stamp 0x486d648f, faulting module MFC80.DLL, version 8.0.50727.762, time stamp 0x457133cf, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0005fbc3, process id 0x169c, application start time 0x01c94da2f1131490.
MFC80.DLL is only available in WinSxS (i know wat winsxs does:)). I need to repair MFC80.dll and cimwin32.dll. I tried to fix cimwin32.dll using sfc /verifyfile and /scanfile /offwindir but didn't work:( and here is the sfc /verfityfile output:

Is there a way to know if winsxs copy of these files are corrupt or not? I can't overwrite these files from other known sources as I always get "Access Denied" message.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks!

PS: I have also tried to copy from the Vista DVD. But DVD version is not SP1 and vista was giving access denied message anyway.

Just to check, have you tried replacing these files in bare bones Safe Mode? I assume you have but sometimes the little things get over looked.

My bad! there was typo in admin user name while taking ownership of the winsxs folder. I was able to replace MFC80.DLL in WinSxS. Windows Explorer and Office are now working just fine. I need to find out other DLLs (cimwin32.dll). The issue now resolved.

Hope it'll other members as well.

Thanks!
