(SOLVED)Lost Admin And asking for .Net Machine Account!

Hello there, i use vista Ultimate, for some reason i am unable to gain my admin account back, and everytime i try to run certain tasks it asks me for asp.net machine account password??

I think i screwed up somewhere whilst trying to enable my admin rights. Now i cannot see the admin account when i log off so i can log on to the admin account, all i get is a standard user account which is not in the admin domain.

Also when i go to control panel>accounts i cannot not even have the right to change the standard user back to the admin domain as it asks me for the asp.net machine account password. What the hell is that?

Ahhhh help driving me nuts!

Hi danbee80, welcome to the Vista Forums

It depends on what exactly has happened with the accounts but,
Vista is designed so that if there is not an admin account present it reverts to the XP method of working. If you boot into safe mode you should be be able to log in as the Hidden admin account, (Default is Blank password), and thus able to create a new admin account that you can use to recover files etc.

If you have an admin account on the machine that you cannot gain access to you may want to have a look here ...

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor

hopre this helps

Hi barman,

i tried that and it came up with the normal user account.

I logged in as normal anyway, and tried to change accounts again still asking for asp.net machine pasword.

ahhhhhh

My Computer

I notice in your original post you use the word "domain" admin, is this machine connected at any time to a business network (ie Domain Controller )? or is it purely in a home scenario?.

If the machine is sometimes connected to a domain controller then It could be that the system is looking for that domain. If this is the case then what need to be done is ,when the machine is connected to the domain, the domain admin account needs to be added to the Local administrators account so that it will operate correctly when the domain controller is not available. It would also be worth creating another local admin account for safety's sake.

if this is a home (workgroup) only system then options are somewhat limited as it appears that the Hidden admin account is still hidden because the system can still see something of the old admin account

Will have a look and see if I can find a bootable option that would allow you to recreate the admin account from an external location but do not hold out much hope :(

Would imagine that some form of re-install (parallel or repair) may be the only option to keep access to your data - not ideal I know

I think that's the same link that I posted in my earlier post,it's a disk that has solved a few problems with users in the past ;) it may be of help but as it's designed to unlock a forgotten password I think we may be out of luck.

As I understand your situation you have an account that used to have admin rights that now only has standard user rights. Vista is set-up to not allow a user to demote the last Admin account on the system to standard user, so this is obviously a glitch somewhere.
What the disk may do is reset the "asp.net machine account password" the system is looking for and allow you to login that way

have a read through the instructions and create the disk and give it a try if the asp.net machine account password shows on the list of resettable passwords then reset it and see what happens if you press enter (reset blank password) when you get the prompt

well good news and bad news. Good news is, the program works and picks up ASPNET/USER/Administrator & Geust accounts.

I removed pasword from ASPNET. But the program seems to not be working properly. i type quit to quit the program and it doesnt work, i wanted to change the account to user but it would not work either, i managed to access admin account and ASPNET account. Like i said i removed the password for ASPNET but a cannot quit the program properly, so i have to press restart and i think that wipes the settings i change because when i boot up windows again and try it, it still the same.

ahhhhhhh

My Computer

ok i just managed to get into the User account which is the one i use and its set to standard, so i just promoteds it to admin.

But now i cant quit the bloody program.

it says

Select: ! - quit, . - list users, 0x<RID> - User with RID (hex)
or simply enter the username to change: [administrator]

i type quit and i get this

cannot find value <\SAM\Domains\Account\Users\Names\quit\@>

WTF??

My Computer

Never had it refuse to quit before :( but if the reset completes this should not effect things.

From the reset disk user instructions on line Highlights are mine
- - - - User Edit Menu:
1 - Clear (blank) user password
2 - Edit (set new) user password (careful with this on XP or Vista)
3 - Promote user (make user an administrator)
(4 - Unlock and enable user account) [seems unlocked already]
q - Quit editing user, back to user select
Select: [q] > 1
Password cleared!

you might want to try option 4 on the administrator account and see if that works to allow you to get in.

As a final attempt (only as a last option - if this goes wrong it could lock you out of the system completely) you could try option 3 on your actual account you can access the system with at present

If you do attempt Option 3 make sure you have backups of all your data

nope, changed all the relevant settings, and nothing is working. Something is up??

The program is not working proper, i have a feeling it would work if the program would program would work properly. Im not sure why it wont.

I cant quit the normal why like i said, so i have to press the reset button on the pc and i think that wipes the settings i just changed .. resulting in NO changes :(

darnn

i wonder if it burnt wrong or summat..

mabye is shud try reburning the disk?

I just sent an email to the program author to see what he thinks.

My Computer

A bad ISO or burning process could be causing the problem - so re downloading and re-burning or just er-burning may get the program working. Hopefully a reply from the author would help as no one would no the program better :D. I think they have a forum on the site so that may also be a source of more info.

As you say it seems so close to working and I can understand your frustration

tried to burn the image again, still the same. Oh welllll

That will teach me. School boy error.

Good job i made a backup last month, i hope it works though.

I cant open the backup manager at mo cuz it asks for that stupid asp.net password.

I just need to backup my outlook and internet explorer fave files somehow and transfer to my external.

Do you know where the fave folder is at all?

My Computer

You could try typing favorites into the start search and as long as the set-ups are still OK (with your other problems it may have changed :( ) the folder should appear.

another way is manage favorites in IE and export them from there...

Hi danbee80,

Great news - Well done!

I Think that's what the option 4 on the disk was supposed to do ;)

The link is now added to my toolbox for the next time I get a call from someone locked out of their machine :)

If you could go back to your first post and edit the title to add "solved" to it may help others

Ok will do barman!

but before i do and while i am in the Admin account, what should i change now?

Should i change my normal user account from Standard to Administrator?

And any other suggestions?

My Computer

What I would do is create another admin account give it a password write the password down and put it somewhere safe. If anything similar does happen again at least you have a "get out of jail free card" :D

Only when you have this available would I suggest you change the standard account back to an admin.

Once you are safe then by all means raise the standard user to an admin

The really "professional" way to work would be to create yourself an admin account and a standard user account. Always log in as the standard user and use run-as or the UAC prompt to use the admin account only when required.

To be honest though since running vista I run the admin/standard account and UAC to elevate as needed.

if this incident has made you worry seriously about it happening again you could activate the hidden admin account (with a password of course) and leave it activated for emergencies ... Ignore this as you are already running as this at the moment but will leave it in as it may help others

Hopefully you will never need anything like this again but it's always nice to be prepared :D ;)
