HD space/JkDefrag

I have a 320 GB HD. When I checked it, I only have 25 gigs of free space. However I can only find about 180 gigs of files/data. Any ideas as to how I lost 100 gigs of available of space? Just a couple of weeks ago I checked and I had plently of space.

No recent installs, only recent changes are the removal of Mcaffee monitoring software and running JkDfrag.

Have you used the disk cleanup tool for your drive.

Well, i ran the program, it only shows 220 GB being used out of the 288 available. When I check the HD properties, it states 266 is in use

then either something is reserving the space (such as system restore, which can reserve 15 to 30% of your hard drive space) or your explorer window is not showing the correct amount of free space.

In your explorer view, where you see the amount of free space, have you pressed F5 on your keyboard? This refreshes the view, and should also refresh the amount used...if it still remains the same after that, then I guess windows restore is reserving space. In which case you will need to plow though some tutorials to limit the amount it can use.

If I recall correctly, you will need to open a Dos box as an administrator, and type vssadmin shadowrestore resize /on=c: /for=c: and then one more value shoud be added...I think something like /size= or something..... We have a great tutorial section, you will find the answer in there. If I have the time I will look it up for you.

Also, have you run a defragmentation lately?
And, have you run checkdisk yet?

Also abudabu12, you don't have to make a new post every time. If no one else has replied to your post yet, you can simply click edit at the bottom of your previous post, and edit and add to that post. Otherwise we will have a whole stream of posts by one person, and that kind of clutters the threads.

There is a 10g partition for system restore that was calculated into total space. I just ran defrag but I have no run checkdisk yet. I'll give it a shot, I'm guessing that space is being reserved by windows. I'll research the tutorials. Thanks for pointing me in that direction.

Well, the 10GB you can do nothing about, as that was probably put there by the systembuilder.

As for systemrestore....it is quite easy to change, but make sure you do not lower the reserved amount too much. Keep enough reserved so you can always do a restore. I have 3 GB reserved myself.

i figured it out. Last week I set up my virtual memory to what I thought was 4000mb. Turns out I had an extra zero in there which would explain the missing 40gb

Glad you figured it out abudabu12.
