Solved Where Did My Hard Drive Space Go??

Hi i'm brand new here so if this post is in the wrong spot please forgive me.
last week i was recoding some video's using Nero's Recode program (sidenote worked great) but now my 100 gig laptop on has 2 gigs of space left from the original 60 gigs free space. where did it go?? the video files have been deleted, i've used the disc clean-up program to remove the temp files and used the registry to enable Pagefiles removeal from another post of this forum. that clean up some on the space i now have 20gigs free space but i still am missing 40 more gigs that i have before i starting the recodeing.
in my disk de-fragmenter is shows me that i have a huge "yellow" portion of paging files still left and by just guessing it should be that extra 40 gigs just by seeing the size of the "yellow" bar.
how do i get rid of these "paging files" and how do i reclaim my lost space?

Yeah, it might be system restore points as well. You can erase all system restore points except for the most recent one if you wanted to.

You can also see how much disk space is being used by System Restore and adjust it's maximum usage as needed.

Thx Both CCleaner and the Shadow Storage size did return some of the space, but there is still those paging files that show up in my disk defrager. where do i go to delete these?? i've changed the registry to delete them but that does not seem to work

MistaMota,

This would be the Virtual Memory Paging File. I would not recommend changing this though, and just let Vista handle it by leaving it set to "System Managed".

You might also use the SP1 Disk Cleanup Tool and Disk Cleanup to free up some hard drisk space.

SP1 Disk Cleanup Tool recovers space regardless of when SP1 installation was done? I mean, my notebook came already with SP1 and I know some older PC's did not in which case SPI was installed later.

Should SP1 be permanently installed, anyway? Why would SP1 uninstallation be considered?

Hi CoolNewYorker,

The SP1 Disk Cleanup Tool only recovers space if the SP1 was installed. It does not uninstall the SP1, which should stay installed, but only removes the backup files created when installing SP1.

Thanks Shawn, this cleared up 2.7 gigs of space, but i also found a hidden files in my windows folder that didn't show up on any searches that i ran the folder was 20 gigs in size. thanks to all that helped... i can only hope i can help some one else

Between Ccleaner, Windows Install Clean up (which btw just showed up on program list yesterday????), built in Disk Clean up and now SP1 Disk Clean up tool, my notebook is gonna be all spic-n-span.

But I am not clear on SP1 tool kit....does it also recover space on system with SP1 that is factory installed? Or only on SP1 that is stalled later on as an upgrade?

And shall I run the Window Staller clean up, too? The warning it has before "next" button looks scary.

AS I said, it just showed up on my Program list. Google search says it is otherwise known as Q290301

Ok, I found it. You must have gotten that program from Method One in this tutorial.

You do not need to run it unless you wanted to do what is in the tutorial.

Ive just resolved the same problem. I got a balloon warning saying system restore had been turned off because my hard drive space was low. However i new this was not so but when i checked sure enough the space bar was red almost to the end. What i did to fix after trying several other things like disc clean up(as if that was going to recover 60 gig)was run advance system care utility disc explorer which analizes the drive and lists the main user culprits from top to bottom and at the very top was azureus download papillon the movie at a staggering 60 gig all on its own:eek: So needless to say i deleted this and now its back to normal:D thought it was taking ages to download. Hope this helps someone else :geek:
